Edward Rell Madigan

Edward Rell Madigan (born January 13, 1936 in Lincoln , Logan County , Illinois , †  December 7, 1994 ) was an American politician ( Republican Party ).

After attending junior college in his hometown of Lincoln, Madigan built his own taxi company . He took on his first public office as a member of the municipal authority for building applications, of which he was a member from 1965 to 1969.

During this time he became politically active for the first time. In 1967 he was elected to the Illinois House of Representatives, where he remained until 1973. After winning a seat in the US House of Representatives in 1972, he moved to Washington the following year . In Congress he sat after nine re-elections until 1991. In 1989 he lost the election to Whip the Republican minority faction against Newt Gingrich .

On March 8, 1991, Madigan resigned from the House of Representatives when President George Bush appointed him to his cabinet as Secretary of Agriculture . He held this post until Bush had to leave the White House after losing re-election.

In 1994 Edward Madigan died of lung cancer . The following year, Railsplitter State Park , a state park south of Lincoln, was renamed Edward R. Madigan State Fish and Wildlife Area in his honor .
