Rene Alexander "Alex" Acosta (born January 16, 1969 in Miami , Florida ) is an American lawyer, university professor and politician. From 2017 to 2019 he was Secretary of Labor of the United States .

The Republican served in three positions for governments that required confirmation from the US Senate: From 2005 to 2009, he was United States Attorney (chief prosecutor and head of the prosecutor's office) in the southern Florida judicial district and under George W. Bush Assistant Attorney General in the US Department of Justice .

From 2009 to 2017 he was the Dean of the Law School at Florida International University . In 2011, Acosta campaigned before Congress to protect the civil rights of Muslim Americans. On February 16, 2017, US President Donald Trump nominated him as the new Minister of Labor for his cabinet after the originally named Andrew Puzder withdrew from the hearings for his appointment to the US Senate due to increasing opposition to him . The son of Cuban immigrants is the first politician of Latin American origin to be nominated by Trump for his cabinet. On April 27, 2017, the Senate confirmed him as Minister of Labor by 60 to 38 votes, and the following day he was sworn in by Vice President Mike Pence .

On July 12, 2019, Acosta announced his resignation on July 19. He had come under criticism because it in 2008 on suspicion of sexual offenses launched investigations of the FBI against Jeffrey Epstein was set and a comparison with the lawyers of Epstein (including Alan Dershowitz ) graduated, the Epstein and any possible suspects with Immunity from further prosecution in the matter. In return, Epstein was found guilty of inciting prostitution and pimping miners , had to pay compensation and was sentenced to 18 months in prison. In February 2019, a federal court ruled that the immunity was invalid because the public prosecutor's office had disregarded or violated the rights of the victims ( Crime Victims' Rights Act) because they did not summon the victims to a hearing before the settlement was concluded and they therefore had no say received.
