The United States Department of Labor (English United States Department of Labor DOL ) is part of the Federal Government of the United States , whose responsibilities for workplace safety , wages , working hours , unemployment insurance , placement of job seekers and professional development . The Washington, DC-based department employed around 17,500 people in 2004.

The American Congress founded an office for labor as early as 1884, located under the Home Office . This employment office ( Bureau of Labor ) was expanded to become the Ministry of Labor, but did not receive the desired status and influence. On February 14, 1903, it went up in the Ministry of Trade and Labor . William Howard Taft , then President, signed the documents separating the two ministries on March 4, 1913 (the last day of his term in office) so that the Department of Labor could act as an independent agency.
