Alfred Schenk Graf von Stauffenberg (born September 27, 1860 in Amerdingen , † January 20, 1936 in Lautlingen ) was the Oberhofmarschall of Wilhelm II. , The last King of Württemberg.

Life

The third of seven children, Stauffenberg was born near the Bavarian-Württemberg border. His parents were the Bavarian officer and Imperial Councilor of the Crown of Bavaria Klemens Schenk Graf von Stauffenberg (1826–1886) and his wife Leopoldine, née Countess Oberndorff (1831–1919).

With the Uhlan regiment "King Wilhelm I." (2nd Württembergisches) No. 20 in Ludwigsburg , Stauffenberg joined the Württemberg army , became a lieutenant in 1883 and a captain in 1897 . On May 30, 1904, he married Karoline Countess von Üxküll-Gyllenband (1875–1956). The couple had twins twice, Berthold and Alexander in 1905 and Claus and Konrad Maria in 1907 . The latter, however, died after a few hours. Berthold and Claus were executed in 1944 as those involved in the resistance against Hitler .

After his military service, Stauffenberg switched to court service in 1899. He became chairman of the royal stables . In 1908 he rose to Oberhofmarschall with the title of Excellency of King Wilhelm II of Württemberg and became one of his closest confidants at court. Stauffenberg was at the head of the court in Stuttgart for ten years. In 1918 he accompanied the royal couple to Bebenhausen in "exile", where he still ran the court. He later negotiated an annual pension for the royal couple with the new government.

When the former King Wilhelm died in 1921, Stauffenberg entered the service of the Catholic Duke Albrecht von Württemberg and headed the Rentkammer of the House of Württemberg (private asset management of the former ruling family) until his retirement in 1928 . Stauffenberg died in the Stauffenberg Castle in Lautlingen and was the first of the family to be buried at his own request since the 17th century in the Lautlingen cemetery in the hereditary burial he set up.

Alfred Schenk Graf von Stauffenberg was awarded numerous medals and decorations in the course of his life . Among other things, he was holder of the Commander's Cross of the Order of the Württemberg Crown , the Grand Cross of the Order of Frederick and Knight of the Order of St. George .
