life and work

The son of a bank director attended elementary school from 1933 to 1937 and then the humanistic grammar school in Mönchengladbach. At the age of 16 he was drafted into the West as an anti-aircraft helper . In Mönchengladbach he passed the Abitur in early May 1946 in a war participant course. From the summer semester of 1947 he studied history, philosophy and linguistics at the universities of Würzburg and Cologne . In 1951 he received his doctorate with Otto Meyer at the University of Würzburg with a thesis on the Cologne Dominican Albertus Magnus . From 1953 to 1956 he completed the course at the Institute for Austrian Historical Research in Vienna, where he passed the state examination for the higher archival service in 1956. The meeting with Alfons Lhotsky in Vienna was particularly formative for Wendehorst . In 1956/57 Wendehorst received a scholarship from the German Historical Institute in Rome . The work in the library there, in the Vatican Archives and in the Vatican Library increased the tendency to devote himself to the history of the medieval church.

In 1957 he joined the archive service in Würzburg and took over the management of the diocesan archive. In 1964 he completed his habilitation in Erlangen and in 1965 he was appointed extraordinary professor for Franconian church history in Würzburg. As the successor to Gerhard Pfeiffer , he held the chair for Bavarian and Franconian regional history at the Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg from the winter semester 1972/73 until his retirement in 1994. Since 1975 Wendehorst has also worked as a university archivist. In 1976, succeeding Pfeiffer, he also took over the scientific management of the Society for Franconian History and held this position until 1996. From 1972 to 1994 he was editor of the yearbook for Fränkische Landesforschung . From 1957 to 2007 he worked at the Max Planck Institute for History . Gerhard Rechter , Dieter J. Weiß and Stefan Benz were among his academic students .

His eight volumes in the Germania Sacra series for the dioceses of Würzburg and Eichstätt , published from 1962 to 2006, brought new insights into the history of Franconia. Wendehorst published numerous relevant works on the history of the Würzburg diocese, including on parish organization and recent diocesan history. Further research focuses are the history of settlements, the history of the university and the history of the old imperial church in Franconia . For the anniversary of the Friedrich-Alexander-Universität he wrote a work in 1993 that spans 250 years of university history. Wendehorst published several larger source editions, including the formula book of the Würzburg bishops from the early 14th century and the document book of the Würzburg Marienkapelle. He published volumes 6 to 17 of the Franconian Life Pictures . Wendehorst was the editor of the Würzburg diocesan history sheets from 1958 to 1974 . From 1972 he was editor for the yearbook for Franconian regional research .

Wendehorst has received numerous scientific honors and memberships for his research. He was a member of the Institute for Austrian Historical Research, the Commission for Historical Regional Studies in Baden-Württemberg , the Commission for Historical Regional Studies in Baden-Württemberg and the Bavarian Benedictine Academy . Wendehorst was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit, First Class, and the Bavarian Order of Merit . The Diocese of Würzburg recognized his work in 1987 with the Saint Bruno Medal.

Wendehorst and his wife moved to Fulda in the summer of 2014. He died there a few months later. He is buried in the cemetery in Fulda-Neuenberg.
