Dieter Joachim Weiß (born July 23, 1959 in Nuremberg ) is a German historian .

Dieter Weiß studied history, German and Latin philology of the Middle Ages at the Friedrich-Alexander-University Erlangen-Nürnberg , the University of Vienna and the Ludwig-Maximilians-University in Munich . In 1985 he passed the state examination and received his doctorate in Erlangen in 1990 with his thesis The History of the Teutonic Order Ballei Franconia in the Middle Ages . He then worked for the Max Planck Institute for History and completed his habilitation in 1995 at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg with the book Das Hochstift Bamberg in Modern Times. Constitution and series of bishops from 1522 to 1693 . From 1990 to 2000 he was a research assistant and senior assistant at the chair of Bavarian and Franconian regional history at the Friedrich-Alexander University Erlangen-Nuremberg. After a substitute professorship for modern and contemporary history taking into account regional history at the Julius Maximilians University of Würzburg from 1998 to 2000, he was appointed professor for Bavarian and Franconian regional history at the University of Bayreuth in 2001 . Since October 2011 he has held the chair for Bavarian History and Comparative National History with a special focus on the Middle Ages, as well as a member of the Institute for Bavarian History at the University of Munich.

Weiß is a member of numerous scientific societies, including the Commission for Bavarian State History at the Bavarian Academy of Sciences since 2006 . He has been a member of the Society for Franconian History since 1990 and its deputy scientific director since 2006. From 2008 to 2011 he was President of the Prince Albert Society . He is a member of the KDSt.V. Vindelicia Munich and the KDSt.V. Frankonia-Czernowitz Erlangen, both in CV .

In 2011 he was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit on Ribbon of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany .
