Alfred von Wierusz-Kowalski (born October 16, 1849 in Suwałki , Congress Poland , † February 15, 1915 in Munich ) was a Polish painter from the Munich School .

Alfred von Wierusz-Kowalski spent his childhood on an estate near Suwałki, a town in what was then the Russian part of Poland. He studied at the academies in Warsaw (1868), Dresden (1869) and Prague, from 1873 in the class of the Hungarian painter Alexander von Wagner at the academy in Munich, where he settled in 1876 and joined the Munich circle of Józef Brandt connected. In 1896 he received a small gold medal at the International Art Exhibition in Berlin .

Often varied motifs of his works were sleigh rides and horse and cart rides, sleds chased by wolves or hungry wolves on the lookout. One of the main works is the 10 m wide and 5 m high colossal painting "The attack of wolves", which was exhibited in the old town hall in Munich in 1910 and discussed as a sensation in the press.

Clear contours as well as bright colors of the snowy landscapes characterize his lively pictures.

For a while, the pseudonym “J. Konarski ”signed painting attributed to Alfred von Wieursz-Kowalski due to the characteristic composition and brushwork. Recently, however, it has been assumed that “J. Konarski ”is a pseudonym of the painter Franciszek Bujakiewicz (1856–1918).
