Alison Steadman , OBE (born August 26, 1946 in Liverpool ) is a British theater and film actress .

Life

Alison Steadman was born in Liverpool in 1946 to George Percival Steadman, an electrical engineer, and Marjorie Steadman (née Evans), a housewife . She left Childwall Valley High School at the age of 16 and initially worked as a secretary. From 1966 to 1969 she attended East 15 Acting School , where she met her future husband, the writer and director Mike Leigh . In 1969 she made her professional theater debut in The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie at the Theater Royal in Lincoln , where she later played Ophelia in William Shakespeare's Hamlet . In 1973 she appeared in Wholesome Glory for the first time in London on stage.

In Abigail's Party (1977), a play by her husband Mike Leigh, which later also aired on television with more than 18 million viewers, Steadman made her breakthrough in the UK in the role of Beverly, a haughty beautician. As early as 1971 she was often seen on British television. From the mid-1980s, she also took part in a number of cinema productions, such as B. Clockwise - right so, Mr. Stimpson (1986), The Adventures of Baron Munchausen (1988) or Doll Murder (1989). In Germany, she is best known for her portrayal of the foolish Mrs. Bennet in the BBC television series Stolz und Vorschluss (1995), where she starred alongside Jennifer Ehle and Colin Firth .

For her role in Life is Sweet (1990) she received the National Society of Film Critics Award for Best Actress . In 1993 she won the Laurence Olivier Award for Best Actress for The Rise and Fall of Little Voice , a play by Jim Cartwright. In 2000 she was awarded the Order of the British Empire for her performance at the theater .

From 1973 to 2001 Steadman was married to Mike Leigh. The marriage resulted in two sons in 1979 and 1981. Since divorcing Leigh, Steadman has lived with actor Michael Elwyn.
