All Things Must Pass ( English Everything must pass ) is the first solo studio album of George Harrison after the separation of the Beatles . It is also George Harrison's third album, including the two instrumental albums from the 1960s. It was released on November 30, 1970 in the UK and on November 27, 1970 in the US .

In the USA and Great Britain the album reached number one on the respective charts.

History of origin

Harrison released All Things Must Pass as his third and most successful solo album, and it was the first studio album in pop history with three LPs . The soundtrack Wonderwall Music (1968) and the electronically oriented album Electronic Sound (1969) had previously been released. The latter was not a classic rock album, but contained sound experiments. Both solo albums received little attention and were commercially unsuccessful.

On All Things Must Pass many songs that accumulated over the years at Harrison and had not found the way to a Beatles album appeared, so that was the title track of the album as a demo in October 1996 on the album Anthology 3 published. Other songs, some of which were still unfinished, were rehearsed during the Let It Be recording sessions .

The recording sessions took place between May and October 1970. The pre-production of the album took place on May 27, 1970 at Abbey Road Studios, where George Harrison recorded acoustic demos, of which the following were not released on the album or further recordings were not made: Window-Window , Cosmic Empire , Mother Divine , Nowhere to Go , Tell Me What Has Happened With You , Beautiful Girl and I Don't Want to Do It . The last two songs were re-recorded in the coming years, Beautiful Girl appeared on the album Thirty Three & 1/3 , I Don't Want to Do It was released as a single in the USA in April 1985. The bonus titles Beware of Darkness and Let It Down from the January 2001 re-release are from the same trial session.

Harrison employed Phil Spector as producer , who had also reproduced the Beatles' last album, Let It Be . Spector was both celebrated and hostile because of its " Wall of Sound ". You can hear him at the peak of his work on All Things Must Pass . In addition to drums and bass , Spector used several acoustic and electric guitars , some of which were barely audible , three keyboard players who play the piano and organ , among other things , and numerous strings and wind instruments that "really let the sound swell into a wall". In addition to Harrison, his friend Eric Clapton was one of the guitarists, while Billy Preston , among others, sat on the keyboard , who had already participated in the Beatles' Let It Be album and played the keyboard solo on the song Get Back . Ringo Starr played drums on many of the songs .

When I'd Have You Anytime there is a joint composition by George Harrison and Bob Dylan , while If Not for You a new Dylan composition is the composer in October 1970 on his New Morning released album. Behind That Locked Door textually deals with Bob Dylan's withdrawal from the public eye after his motorcycle accident in July 1966.

Hear Me Lord and My Sweet Lord are songs in prayer form. My Sweet Lord was Harrison's most successful single and reached number 1 in the charts in many countries around the world. Harrison was sued the following year, however, because My Sweet Lord had similarities with the song He's So Fine by the Chiffons from 1963. Years later, the court ruled that Harrison had "unconsciously plagiarized" the song.

Awaiting on You All reflects Harrison's religious views.

Harrison wrote wah-wah during the January 1969 recording sessions for Let it Be / Get Back when he briefly left the Beatles, wah-wah is a metaphor for a headache.

Apple Scruffs pays homage to the female (Beatles) fans who stood in front of Abbey Road Studios or the Apple building and who were given the unflattering designation ' Apple scruffs ' by Harrison .

Entrance to the Friar Park property

Ballad of Sir Frankie Crisp (Let It Roll) pays another tribute, here to Frankie Crisp , he was the original builder of the house, Friar Park, where Harrison had lived since 1970.

The titles Run of the Mill , Beware of Darkness , Art of Dying and All Things Must Pass reflect the philosophical views of George Harrison. The remaining titles Isn't It a Pity , What Is Life , Let It Down and I Dig Love deal with the topic of love.

During the recording sessions, other songs, some not completely, were recorded. Only I Live for You was published in January 2001 as a bonus title. The songs Down to the River , Whenever , Dehra Dun , Going Down to Golders Green and Om Hare OM (Gopala Krishna) have so far only been published on bootlegs and have not appeared legally. The third LP Apple Jam , consisting of instrumental songs, was mainly recorded in the Apple studios and musically sets itself apart from the other songs on the album.

All Things Must Pass proved to be a huge commercial and artistic success that Harrison could not repeat and by which his future studio albums were measured. In March 2001, the album was certified multi-platinum in the US for six million units sold.
