Brainwashed ( English , brain wash ') is the tenth solo album of George Harrison after separation of the Beatles . At the same time, including the two instrumental albums from the 1960s, the studio albums, the two compilation albums and the two live albums, it is Harrison's 16th album. It was released on November 18, 2002 in the UK and on November 19, 2002 in the US a year after George Harrison's death.

History of origin

After the release of the last live album Live in Japan in July 1992, it became musically relatively quiet around George Harrison, so between 1992 and 2001 he only supported other musicians ( Jimmy Nail , Alvin Lee , Gary Wright , Ringo Starr , Electric Light Orchestra , Bill Wyman's Rhythm Kings , Rubyhorse, Jim Capaldi and Carl Perkins ) as guitarist or background singer. George Harrison was only significantly involved in two musical projects, on the one hand in the production of the Beatles' anthology CDs and the production of the CD Chants of India by Ravi Shankar , which he not only produced, but also contributed several instruments and background vocals to .

George Harrison's film production company HandMade Films had been in financial trouble since the late 1980s and was sold to Paragon Entertainment Corporation in 1994 . This was followed in January 1995 by a legal battle with the manager of Handmade Films and business partner of George Harrison, Denis O'Brien, which George Harrison won in 1996.

Otherwise Harrison had mostly withdrawn into private life, he only worked sporadically on a new album. George Harrison's cancer since 1997 and being injured by a burglar in his estate on December 30, 1999 acted as the driving force for him to end the album. He worked closely with his son Dhani and producer Jeff Lynne , who eventually completed the album after his death. In doing so, they kept to the exact schedule that Harrison had set himself when it was not yet foreseeable that he would die in 2001. Jon Lord , Sam Brown , Jools Holland and Jim Keltner can be heard on the album as guest musicians.

Run So Far was originally recorded by Eric Clapton for his album Journeyman in 1989, with George Harrison singing the backing vocals and playing guitar. Harrison added a Hawaiian guitar to his versionand re-sang the title. Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea was recorded for British television in mid-1991 and is a cover version of Aida Ward. The composition is by Harold Arlen and Ted Koehler . Any Road was made during a video shoot for Cloud Nine album in 1987 and was first recorded in May 1997 for a VH1 special, during which Harrison also wore acoustic versions of the songs All Things Must Pass and the Traveling Wilburys title If You Belonged Before. The remaining songs were recorded between 1997 and 2001.

George Harrison with Mukunda Goswami at Bhaktivedanta Manor, June 1996

Brainwashed is about the false idols of society and attacks global players and politicians. Bikram Gosh plays the tabla on this piece. The song contains excerpts from the text "How to Know God" by Namah Parvarti. Vatican Blues (Last Saturday Night) is a humorous religious allusion. Pisces Fish , Looking for My Life, and Rising Sun are Harrison's philosophical approaches to life in general and his own.

Marwa Blues is an instrumental song. Stuck Inside a Cloud , Never Get Over You and Rocking Chair in Hawaii are love songs.

George Harrison recorded his last song Horse to the Water on October 2, 2001 with Jools Holland & his Rhythm & Blues Orchestra , later recordings are not yet known. The track was released on the album Jools Holland's Big Band Rhythm & Blues . George Harrison passed away on November 29, 2001.

“He never flinched. He never felt sorry for himself. He never lost his sense of humor. He wasn't afraid of death, his own mortality, although he was very aware of it. He wasn't even attached to his body, if you know what I mean. We'd be in the kitchen and he'd say, 'Dhan, you know we are not these bodies, don't you?' ”

“He never shrank from it. He never melted into self-pity. He never lost his sense of humor. He wasn't afraid of death, of his own mortality, although he was very aware of it. He wasn't even particularly attached to his body if you get what I mean. We were sitting in the kitchen and he said to me: 'Dhan, you know that we are not these bodies, right?' "

- Dhani Harrison

In December 2002, the album was awarded gold in the USA for 500,000 copies sold.
