Marie-Alphonse Dain (born April 3, 1896 in Chavignon , Département Aisne , † July 10, 1964 in Paris ) was a French Graecist , Byzantinist , palaeographer and codicologist .

Life

Dain attended schools in Chauny and Soissons , both places near his birthplace Chavignon in northern France. During the First World War , Dain initially served as an officer in an infantry unit, then at his own request for reasons of conscience as a reconnaissance officer in the Air Force, in order to be responsible only for himself. After two kills, he was awarded the Croix de guerre with Palme and the Legion of Honor.

The beginning of his studies was delayed by the war. He studied from 1922 to 1924 as a pupil of Paul Mazon (1874–1955) and Émile Bourguet (1868–1939) Classical Philology at the Sorbonne , with Étienne Michon (1865–1939), Edmond Pottier and Alfred Merlin at the École du Louvre , then after graduating from Alexandre Marie Desrousseaux (1861–1955) at the École Pratique des Hautes Études . In 1926 he was able to acquire the Agrégation de lettres .

From 1922 onwards he was also Assistant de grec, from 1938 Professor of Greek Language and Literature and from 1954 to 1964 Dean of the Faculté des Lettres at the Institut catholique de Paris .

From 1928 to 1932 he was suppléant for Desrousseaux, from 1929 lecturer for exercises in Greek palaeography at the chair of Henri Lebègue , from 1932 to maître de conférences, from 1942 to directeur d'études in Greek palaeography at the École pratique des Hautes Études.

With a thesis on the text history of Ailianos Taktikos , he received his doctorate in 1946 as Docteur ès lettres. During the Second World War he actively joined the Resistance and was awarded the Médaille de la Résistance as well as an officer of the Légion d'honneur for military services .

From his youth, Dain was a member of the Association pour l'encouragement des études grecques en France , from 1946 to 1953 its general secretary and 1955 its president, as well as a member of the Société des Études latines , of which he was chairman in 1949.

He was also a member of the Association Guillaume Budé , its general secretary since 1944 and its deputy chairman since 1955, as well as editor of the Collection des Universités de France published by Les Belles Lettres . For this edition series he set new standards in the critical text edition ( collation of manuscripts, creation of a stem , complete apparatus ).

From 1949 to 1962 he was exécutif secretary of the Association Internationale des Études Byzantines , and in 1962 its vice-president.

He was also a founding member of the Fédération Internationale des Associations d'Études Classiques , whose first congress he organized in Paris in 1950 , and membre libre résidant of the Académie des inscriptions et belles-lettres (elected on December 21, 1962, appointed on January 31 1963).

He was also director of the catalog of Greek manuscripts of the Bibliothèque nationale de France and a member of the Conseil supérieur de l'Éducation nationale appointed by the minister.

research

Dain distinguished himself through his work on Greek handwriting ( palaeography ) and the science of handwritten books, the Codex ( codicology ). He is considered to be one of the founders of codicology in France and the creator of the term codicology, which appears in his major palaeographic work Les Manuscrits from 1949. His specialties were the Byzantine military writers ( Onesandros , Heron of Byzantium , Sylloge Tacticorum , Nikephoros Uranos , Ailianos Taktikos, Leon VI. , Aineias Taktikos ) and legal scholars. He also edited the Attic lexicon Philetairos , which was probably wrongly ascribed to Ailios Herodianos .

His early work includes editions of the Musée du Louvre and Musée du Bardo inscriptions .

Together with Paul Mazon, he edited the three-volume Sophocles edition of the Budé Collection. He was also involved in the edition of the Greek anthology in the same series of two volumes as a translator and posthumous editor.

Dain also created a grammar, a morphology , a metric for Greek and wrote a thesis on Greek style and sentence types in Greek.

  1. As Corpus perditum Dain describes a now lost treatise, of which the second half of the Sylloge Tacticorum and the third part of the tactics of Nikephoros Uranos are paraphrases.
