Amadeus is a European software company that sells the computer reservation system (CRS) of the same name .

history

The Amadeus flight reservation system was created at the end of the 1980s: On June 17, 1987, Air France, Iberia, SAS and Deutsche Lufthansa signed contracts in Paris to establish the Amadeus CRS, according to which an internationally marketable CRS was to be developed on a European basis To break US supremacy, which was determined among other things by the CRS Saber . The first phase of the system development was completed in 1991, the first booking with Amadeus was made on January 7, 1992. In 1995, the American competitor System One , a subsidiary of Eastern Air Lines , was taken over. In 2002 Amadeus rose to become the world leader in flight reservation systems. A strategic realignment was initiated in 2005. Amadeus aims to become the world's leading provider of IT solutions for airlines and the entire tourism industry.

Locations

The company's head office is in Madrid , from where marketing is also carried out. The Sophia Antipolis site near Nice is responsible for developing and selling the software under the name Amadeus SAS . The data center called Amadeus Data Processing GmbH is located in Erding near Munich . Other important locations of departments and subsidiaries are Bad Homburg vor der Höhe , Würselen , Miami , Bangkok , Bangalore , London , Buenos Aires and Sydney .

Ownership

At the end of 2005, Amadeus was largely (99.0%) sold to the newly founded company WAM Acquisition SA through a debt-financed takeover . This company is majority owned by Amadelux Investment SA (54.24%) ( BC Partners / Cinven ), with a minority holding by Air France (22.88%), Iberia (11.44%) and Lufthansa (11.44%) . Amadeus has not been listed on the Madrid, Paris and Frankfurt stock exchanges since then .

In April 2010, WAM Acquisition SA brought part of Amadeus back to the Madrid Stock Exchange . The first tranche of the IPO , which was oversubscribed four times, brought in around 1.3 billion euros, of which just under one billion will be used to repay debt. While Lufthansa and Air France also want to put their shares on the stock exchange, Iberia wants to keep their own.

Lufthansa announced on November 13, 2012 that it wanted to sell 3.61% of the 7.61% that remained there.

Branches

In the individual countries, Amadeus Commercial Organizations (ACOs) are responsible for looking after travel agencies and tour operators. The ACOs are independent companies, but they are often owned by Amadeus. The ACO responsible for Germany is Amadeus Germany in Bad Homburg near Frankfurt am Main. The German ACO occupies a special position because it has taken on global tasks in addition to regional ones, such as global central purchasing, development or security services.

The development location in Frankfurt is closely linked with Sofia Antipolis, Villeneuve-Loubet and Antwerp. On the one hand, developments for the earlier start - now the German Backend System - are taking place in Bad Homburg. On the other hand, the global development departments for the Amadeus Selling Platform as well as the mid and back office are located here.

Vulnerabilities

In December 2016 it became known that researchers from the Berlin company "SRLabs" had found security gaps in the Amadeus booking system, and similar security gaps were also found in the systems of Saber (CRS) or in-house systems of airlines, but the German press was involved in the reporting just fixated on Amadeus. Due to the insufficient security of the “CheckMyTrip” website, it was possible to systematically try out the combination of the traveler's booking number and surname. If the combination is known, details of the booking can be changed maliciously. After the report was published, the website was secured through more restrictive rate limiting .
