The International Consolidated Airlines Group SA , shortly International Airlines Group , or IAG , is a holding company for several airlines . IAG is based in Madrid and its corporate headquarters are in London . With over 905 aircraft and 101 million passengers per year, IAG is the third largest European aviation group after Ryanair and Lufthansa .

history

IAG was created through the merger of the two airlines British Airways and Iberia , which were retained as IAG brands with their own names. The company was entered in the Commercial Register on January 21, 2011 , and trading began on January 24, 2011 in Madrid and London, the headquarters of the two airlines.

On December 22, 2011, IAG and Lufthansa announced the takeover of British Midland Airways, which had previously been owned by Lufthansa, by British Airways . British Airways paid Lufthansa a sum of 207 million euros for this. On March 30, 2012 the EU Commission approved the purchase. In return, IAG had to surrender 14 take-off and landing rights at London Heathrow Airport .

In March 2013, the International Airlines Group increased its stake in the Spanish low-cost airline Vueling to over 90 percent and thus became the majority owner.

On January 30, 2015, Qatar Airways bought 9.99% of the shares in IAG and increased this stake to 15% in 2016, to 20% in 2017 and to 25% in 2020.

In September 2015, IAG completed the acquisition of Aer Lingus . The purchase price was 1.4 billion euros.

IAG also has an 18% stake in the South African Comair (since 2000).

Fleet policy

The fleet currently consists of 356 short- and medium-haul aircraft and 549 long-haul aircraft. The long-haul aircraft fleet is to be expanded to 716 and modernized at the same time by 2023. IAG will gradually phase out the Boeing 747-400 and Airbus A340 sub-fleets at British Airways and Iberia by 2023 and 2022 respectively.
