history

Legal & General was founded in June 1836 by six lawyers in a Chancery Lane business. Initially the company name was "New Law Life Assurance Society". Later the name changed to "Legal & General Life Assurance Society". The group expanded into the UK insurance market and began acquiring life insurance companies internationally: in the 1930s it acquired the Metropolitan Life Assurance Company in New York . In 1956 the road to the life insurance market in Australia was taken. In the 1970s, the entire company became the property of Legal & General Group plc. In the 1980s Legal & General acquired two other life insurance companies in the United States and one in the Netherlands.

Legal & General Australia was sold in 1998. A year later, the project failed to push through a merger with the National Westminster Bank , since this was taken over by the Royal Bank of Scotland . In 2002 Northern Rock bought the Legal & General Bank and Legal & General Mortgage Services divisions . 2002 Legal & General bought Suffolk Life , a provider of pension products. In the same year, the company also offered insurance solutions for German customers for the first time.

Legal & General in Germany

Since 2002, insurance solutions for German customers have been sold in Germany through "Legal & General Deutschland Service GmbH" in Cologne . This included term life insurance, unit-linked annuity insurance and life insurance. New business with unit-linked life and pension insurance was discontinued in mid-2010. At the end of 2010, new business with term life insurance was discontinued.

On March 1, 2011 Legal & General withdrew completely from Germany. "Legal & General Deutschland Service GmbH", which was once based in Cologne, was closed and the support for German customers was handed over to a service provider in Ireland (Dublin).

As of December 1, 2016, Legal & General's German business was completely discontinued and the remaining Legal & General insurance contracts were transferred to Canada Life plc, also based in Dublin / Ireland, with the contracts being managed by the aforementioned service provider - now under the name of Canda Life-
