The company Centrica is a British power company. Located on the London Stock Exchange in the stock index FTSE 100 Index listed company is active worldwide, with a focus on the UK , North America and a number of countries in Europe, including Germany.

history

The company was founded in 1997 when British Gas plc spun off part of its business and renamed itself BG plc (later BG Group plc). In the UK, Centrica is one of the largest providers of electricity, gas and energy services under the British Gas brand. Centrica acquired the Automobile Association (AA) in 1999 for £ 1.1 billion. In 2004, AA was again sold to two European private investment firms CVC and Permira for £ 1.75 billion . In addition, Centrica bought the Dyno franchise group.

In 2009 Centrica announced that it would take over 20 percent of British Energy for 2.55 billion euros from Électricité de France .

The German subsidiary Centrica Energie GmbH was closed in April 2012 after only a few years in the German energy market. Since the takeover of the Belgian REstore NV in 2017 by the Centrica division Centrica Business Solutions, Centrica has been operating again as Centrica Business Solutions GmbH in the German market.
