American Zoetrope is an American film production company founded by American film directors Francis Ford Coppola and George Lucas in 1969. The name goes back to an early cinematographic apparatus called the zoetrope . Such a device had been given to Coppola shortly before. The famous film editor Walter Murch was there from the start.

The company was originally located in a warehouse at 827 Folsom Street in San Francisco . The first film studio was in 1969 Francis Ford Coppola film The Rain People (The Rain People) , then followed George Lucas ' visionary debut feature THX 1138 . Coppola's The Godfather trilogy and Apocalypse Now , as well as his daughter Sofia's films such as Lost in Translation, were also produced there. American Zoetrope also produced other films such as Koyaanisqatsi , Powaqqatsi andNaqoyqatsi by Godfrey Reggio and Jeepers Creepers - It's Done , Jeepers Creepers 2 and Jeepers Creepers 3 by Victor Salva .
