Andreas Nohl
Andreas Nohl (born August 26, 1954 in Mülheim an der Ruhr ) is a German writer , translator , editor and critic .
life and work
Andreas Nohl spent his childhood in Mülheim an der Ruhr. He studied philosophy in West Berlin and Frankfurt am Main with Jacob Taubes and Alfred Schmidt . After studying for a year in San Francisco (contact with Reinhard Lettau and Henry Roth ), he worked as an antiquarian in Cologne and Munich . He has been working as a freelance writer since 1989, and has lived in Augsburg with his wife, the singer Liat Himmelträger , since 1994 . You have three children. From 1990 to 2003 he published literary reviews for Die Zeit and the Neue Zürcher Zeitung, among others . Since 2005 he has been editor of the literary newspaper Augsburger Satyr . His first short story book Persecution of Bartholomé (1978), for which he received the Jürgen Ponto Foundation's literary prize, awarded for the first time under the aegis of Golo Mann , was compared stylistically with Robert Musil . Both this first and the following volume, Amazone and Sattelmacher (1985), are concerned with emotional borderline situations that lead to a mythical and uncanny distortion of reality. His third book Hieronymus (1993) takes on the forgotten comrade of Jan Hus : Hieronymus von Prag . The combination of historical facts and fiction is partly reminiscent of Truman Capote's journalistic narrative technique . As an essayist and editor, Nohl campaigned primarily for American literature ( Edgar Allan Poe , Mark Twain , William Faulkner , Henry Roth, Lisel Mueller , Keith Abbott, etc.).
With his new translation of Mark Twain's Tom Sawyer's Adventure and Huckleberry Finn's Adventure (both 2010) and the first translation of Robert Louis Stevenson's St. Ives (2011), Andreas Nohl excelled as a translator of classic-modern English and American literature .
Together with theater maker Sebastian Seidel , he visited Chinese writers in Jinan , Shandong Province , in 2012 and edited the German-Chinese anthology Tales of Two Cities (2014), which was published in the national language in Germany and China at the same time.
