from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Andrei Yafaev is a French mathematician who studies number theory and arithmetic algebraic geometry.

Yafaev studied at the University of Rennes , where he obtained his diploma in 1998 (DEA) and his doctorate in 2000 with Bas Edixhoven ( Sous-variétés des variétés de Shimura ). From 2001 he was at University College London (UCL) in London , where he has been a lecturer since 2003 and a reader since 2009 .

He also deals with Shimura varieties (higher-dimensional generalizations of the module curve ) With Emmanuel Ullmo and Bruno Klingler, in 2006 he proved the André-Oort conjecture about sub-varieties of Shimura varieties, assuming the generalized Riemann conjecture .

From 2003 to 2005 he was a British EPSRC Fellow. In 2006 he received the Philip Leverhulme Prize.

He is the son of the Russian-born math professor in Rennes Dmitri Yafaev .
