Emmanuel Ullmo (born June 25, 1965 in Paris ) is a French mathematician who deals with number theory and arithmetic algebraic geometry.

Ullmo studied from 1985 to 1989 at the École normal supérieure de Cachan and received his doctorate in 1993 under Lucien Szpiro at the University of Paris-Süd (University of Paris-XI) in Orsay ( Points entiers points de torsions des surfaces arithmétiques ). From 1993 he was Maître de conférences in Orsay and in 1997 he received his habilitation. He has been a professor at the University of Paris-South since 2001. From 2007 to 2010 he headed the mathematics faculty and from 2002 to 2006 he was on the scientific council of the Center Émile Borel.

Since September 2013 he has been director of the IHES as the successor to Jean-Pierre Bourguignon .

He was a visiting scholar at IMPA in Rio de Janeiro for a year and a half in 1991/92 , two years at Princeton University (1999 to 2001 as Assistant Professor) and six months in 2005 at Tsinghua University . From 2003 to 2008 he was a junior member of the Institut Universitaire de France .

In 1998 he proved a conjecture by Fyodor Alexejewitsch Bogomolow , which generalized the Manin-Mumford conjecture and which states that for a curve C over a number field K of gender and its embedding X in its Jacobi variety J over K is the number of points in X is finite over K with a bounded Néron-Tate height on J. Independently at the same time, Shou-Wu Zhang proved this (more precisely, he proved a generalization of the Bogomolov conjecture).

He also deals with Shimura varieties , modular forms and automorphic forms , Arakelov geometry and applications of ergodic theory in number theory, for example questions of equal distribution of points of small height in Abelian varieties , Hecke points and CM ( Complex Multiplication ) points in Shimura Varieties. In 2006, with Andrei Yafaev and Bruno Klingler, he proved the André-Oort conjecture about sub-varieties of Shimura varieties, assuming the generalized Riemann conjecture .

In 2002 he was an Invited Speaker at the International Congress of Mathematicians in Beijing ( Théorie Ergodique et Géometrie Arithmetique ). In 2006 he received the Prix Élie Cartan of the French Academy of Sciences.

Since 2006 he has been co-editor and since 2008 co-managing editor of Inventiones Mathematicae and he is co-editor of Panoramas et Synthèses of the SMF. In 2014 he was elected a member of the Academia Europaea .
