Andrew T. Smith

Andrew Thomas Smith (born March 14, 1946 ) is an American zoologist . He is professor at the School of Life Sciences at Arizona State University in Tempe , Arizona , and since 2008 visiting professor at Beijing Normal University in Beijing , PR China .

Life

Andrew T. Smith received his Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of California at Berkeley in 1968 . He then went to the University of California in Los Angeles as a teaching associate until 1972 , where he received his doctorate in 1973 . His dissertation was entitled The distribution and dispersal of pikas ( Ochotona princeps ) . He then went to the University of Alberta for a year and was then Assistant Professor at the University of Miami in Coral Gables from 1974 to 1978 and Adjunct Assistant Professor from 1978 to 1980. Since 1978 he has been working at Arizona State University, where he was Assistant Professor from 1978 to 1983, then Associate Professor until 1991 and Professor since 1991. In 1994, Smith completed a year of research at the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN) in Gland , Switzerland , and another year of research in 2001 at the University of Sydney , Australia . From 2006 to 2009 he was Associate Director of Arizona State University and since 2008 he has been visiting professor at Beijing Normal University in Beijing , PR China .

Smith is a field researcher and is primarily concerned with the study of populations and sociological structures in mammals , especially whistles and other small mammals. In addition, he concentrates on ecological and numerous other factors of the observed populations and uses his findings in applied species protection . Smith is a contributing author and a member of the American Society of Mammalogists , the Animal Behavior Society , the Ecological Society of America, and the Society for Conservation Biology .
