Anna Hill Johnstone

Anna Hill Johnstone (born April 7, 1913 in Greenville , South Carolina , † October 16, 1992 in Lenox , Massachusetts ) was an American costume designer . Johnstone, who designed costumes for both film productions and theater productions, was twice nominated for an Oscar .

Life

Anna Hill Johnstone attended Barnard College in New York City that she graduated from in 1934. Johnstone began her career on Broadway , where she initially worked as an assistant to various costume designers such as Irene Sharaff and Lucinda Ballard . For the first time as chief costume designer Johnstone worked in 1946 in the production Temper in the Wind , which was performed from December 1946 to January 1947 at the Playhouse Theater. She designed the costumes for major productions such as Anna Hill Johnstone by Tennessee Williams and After the Fall , based on Arthur Miller's work of the same name . She worked several times in film productions for Sidney Lumet and Elia Kazan .

Johnstone was married to Curville Jones Robinson for more than 50 years.
