Life

Anny Engelmann was the daughter of the merchant Max Engelmann (1856–unknown) and Ernestine Engelmann, née Brecher (1866–1942). A brother of her mother was the psychoanalyst Guido Brecher . Her brother Paul Engelmann (1891-1965) became an architect, and her brother Peter Eng (1892-1939) became a graphic artist.

Nothing is known about Anny Engelmann's education, there were only limited educational opportunities for girls, as a daughter she had to take a backseat to her brothers' education, and her father went bankrupt. The fact that she later looked after her parents and returned to Olmütz from Vienna also corresponded to the role model. She probably received privately organized artistic training. On October 31, 1920, an exhibition of her illustrations for children's books was opened in Olomouc at the Society of Friends of Art in Olomouc.

In the 1920s she often lived in Vienna. She published primarily under the pseudonym "Suska" (Czech "Susanne"), her first verifiable publication from 1923 was under this artist name. Hans Christian Andersen 's fairy tale Ole Lukøje was published in Prague by Obelisk Verlag in German and in Czech, both editions with Suska's illustrations.

More than 35 illustrated books by Suska/Anny/Annie Engelmann can be bibliographically proven. The Löwensohn publishing house in Fürth published children's books in several languages or took on international print jobs in which Suska's illustrations were used several times. Among her commissions was the design of the Czech edition of James Matthew Barrie's Peter Pan in three volumes: Petr Pan v Kensingtonském Parku (1925) and Petr Pan a Wendy (1926, 1927), which will be published in the children's book series Dětská četba ' ('The Children Read') appeared. The title of the book and the signet of the series, edited by Milena Jesenská , also came from her.

Since she was Jewish, she was not allowed to be a member of various professional associations, such as the "Association of German Women Painters in Czechoslovakia". She is also not documented in the catalog of Czech public art collections.

Her brother Paul emigrated to Palestine from authoritarian Austria in 1934 . Her brother Peter and sister-in-law Anna Eng committed suicide in Olmütz after the German invasion of Czechoslovakia in March 1939 .

On June 30, 1942, Anny Engelmann was deported by the National Socialists with transport AAg from occupied Olmütz (Czech Olomouc) to the Theresienstadt concentration camp and from there with transport AAx on July 14, 1942 to the Maly Trostinec death camp . On July 15, 1942, her mother became a victim of the Nazi persecution of the Jews (Shoah) in the Theresienstadt concentration camp .
