Anthem to Beauty is a documentary about the production and recording of the Grateful Dead albums Anthem of the Sun and American Beauty .

history

The documentary was first shown in a short version in 1997 within the television series Classic Albums , before the full-length documentary was first released in 1998 on VHS and in 1999 on DVD.

The documentary was produced by the Eagle Rock Entertainment label with the help of BBC , NCRV , VH-1 and Grateful Dead Productions . Directed by Jeremy Marre , who directed a documentary about Aryan Brotherhood , the biographies for Marvin Gaye ( What's going on ), James Brown ( Soul Survivor - The James Brown Story ) and Phil Spector ( The Real Phil Spector ). He was nominated for a Grammy in 2002 for his biographical documentary about Bob Marley ( Rebel Music ) .

In addition to the documentation of the album recordings, early live performances of concerts for Anthem of the Sun and Workingman's Dead as well as phases of the production of Aoxomoxoa are shown, in some cases performances from the Festival Express tour. Both the production and the live performances are commented on by the band members and crew at the time, with most of the interviews being conducted specifically for this documentary, but using older interviews from the late 1980s and early 1990s by bandleader Jerry Garcia , who died in 1995 were.

In addition to the band members, people who were close to the band or who worked in the crew commented on the scenes at the time, such as David Crosby from Crosby, Stills and Nash and David Grisman , who both had contact with the band and often played at concerts.

In addition to the general problems with the recording, the interviews deal with the relationship between the Grateful Dead and their label Warner Bros. Records at the time and their chairman Joe Smith and the change in the band during this period, from their psychedelic rock phase to more folk rock . Recordings. To give a better insight into this period, recordings from the Hugh Hefner show Playboy After Dark (1969) and from the KQED TV show Calibration (1970) are also used.
