Anthony N. Villanueva (born March 18, 1945 - May 13, 2014 in Cabuyao ) was a Filipino boxer .
Career
Anthony Villanueva was Filipino Champion in 1962 and qualified for the 1964 Summer Olympics in Tokyo . In the bantamweight he was able to fight his way to the finals with wins over Giovanni Girgenti , Ben Hassan , Piotr Gutman and Charles Brown . There he met Stanislaw Stepashkin from the Soviet Union. By making a point decision, he lost just 2: 3 and thus won the silver medal. Shortly thereafter, he lost his amateur status, having starred in five films as an actor.
At the age of 20, Villanueva turned professional. He played his first professional fight on October 2, 1965 against Shigeo Nirasawa from Japan in the Araneta Coliseum . Villanueva won the fight after a controversial point decision.
He supported the Filipino boxing coaches in preparation for the 1988 Summer Olympics .
Personal
Villanueva graduated from Far Eastern University . He had two children with his first wife, but later divorced. In 1976 he moved to the United States , where he worked as a cook in a Mexican restaurant in Massachusetts , as a security officer in Staten Island and finally at the Philippine Consulate in New York City . He then married a second time and had a son with his second wife.
Villanueva suffered a minor stroke in 1999. A year later he tried to sell his silver medal for 1 million pesos. However, he was persuaded to donate the medal to the Philippine Sports Commission.
His father José Villanueva was also a boxer and won a bronze medal at the 1932 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles .
