Antolin

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Antolin is a web-based program for promoting reading in schools .

program

The program is aimed primarily at schools, educational institutions and libraries. Students can only participate through their teachers, who register with Antolin and set up point accounts for their students.

Was developed Antolin Albert Hoffmann, a teacher of the elementary school Witzmannsberg at Passau . It was first put online in September 2001. The aim of the program is to use the attraction of the computer to children in order to encourage them to read. By answering quiz questions about books they have read, students can collect points via the Internet. The teachers track the reading activity and reading comprehension of their students using statistical evaluations.

In the United States , the software company Renaissance Learning has offered a similar program since 1985; it is called Accelerated Reader there . While Accelerated Reader focuses on the so-called Reading Assessment (i.e. the teacher checking whether a student has read a book), Antolin focuses on reading motivation. Antolin therefore tries to arouse enthusiasm for literature through book recommendations, opinion polls on a story or background information on authors.

function

Antolin works on the principle of learning objective control. After a student has read a book listed on Antolin , he logs on to his individual Internet account. The child is asked between five and fifteen questions using the multiple-choice method. Correct answers are counted with plus points, incorrect answers with minus points and the result is saved in the student account. The questions require intensive reading.

With Antolin, parents and teachers have been given a means to follow the reading and reading comprehension of their children or pupils with the computer. Teachers get a detailed overview of the reading activity of the class and each student. In some schools, Antolin reading lessons are already a fixed program in the timetable.

If the teacher so provides, the children in the school class can also collect points during the school holidays. For each book the student has only one attempt to answer the questions; only the teacher has the option provided for exceptional cases to allow a new attempt for given books. Antolin can also be used in secondary school beyond primary school, provided that the primary school teacher hands the students over to the secondary school teacher, who then enables the students. The access data and scores of the students are retained.

Antolin can also be used for teaching English in primary and secondary schools . Here the reading questions must be answered in English.

business

Antolin is operated by the Westermann printing and publishing group . The number of Antolin schools in North Rhine-Westphalia rose to 2,000 by the summer of 2006, according to the Ministry for Schools and Further Education of North Rhine-Westphalia . According to the publisher, the system is used by around 2.1 million schoolchildren in Germany , Austria and Switzerland and contains quiz questions on over 76,000 books for children and young people. Schoolchildren have processed more than 210 million questions (as of April 2017). The focus is on grades 1 to 6.

criticism

It is questionable whether, with Antolin, intrinsic motivation - reading books for its own sake - will be replaced or rather supplemented by an external incentive system.
