Antonio Aranda

Antonio Aranda Mata (born November 13, 1888 in Leganés , † February 8, 1979 in Madrid ) was a Spanish army officer who fought on the side of Franco during the Spanish Civil War and took part in a monarchist conspiracy against the Franco regime in 1941.

He was an engineer and geographer and already fought in Morocco. He was involved in the suppression of the Asturian uprising in 1934 and received the rank of colonel. At the beginning of the civil war in 1936 he was the commander of the Oviedo garrison . He revolted against the Second Spanish Republic and emerged victorious from the siege of Oviedo . For this he received the Cross of San Fernando and was promoted to the rank of general. He was involved in various battles during the Civil War, including the Battle of Teruel and the Battle of the Ebro. Towards the end of the war in 1939, his troops occupied Valencia , where he was raised to the degree of major general .

After the war he became director of the Royal Geographical Society. In 1941 he took part in a monarchist conspiracy against the Franco regime. When it became known that Aranda was a Freemason , he was given early retirement.

In 1976 King Juan Carlos I gave him the title of Lieutenant General.
