  • 1872 : As far as is known, the Baltic Sea is hit by the heaviest Baltic storm flood to date . In the morning, meter-high waves surprise the sleeping coastal inhabitants. 271 people lose their lives and over 15,000 become homeless.
  • 1960 : In the city of Amude in the Syrian part of Kurdistan, 152 children are killed in a cinema fire.
  • 1965 : The American liner Yarmouth Castle goes up in flames in the middle of the night off Nassau ( Bahamas ) and sinks, 90 passengers and crew members die. The accident leads to new regulations for safety at sea within the framework of the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea .
  • 1970 : A cyclone hits land in the Bhola region , Pakistan, killing over 500,000 people, mainly due to the associated tidal wave.
