Daniela Klemenschits (born November 13, 1982 in Vienna ; † April 9, 2008 in Salzburg ) was an Austrian tennis player .

Career

Klemenschits and her twin sister Sandra formed the strongest women's pair in Austria until 2006. In 2005, the two sisters played two games in the Fed Cup . At ITF level, Daniela Klemenschits won a total of 22 double titles between 2000 and 2006, almost always in a team with her sister. In August 2005 she was ranked 95th in the double world rankings, her highest position in singles was 356th in July 2001.

Both sisters fell ill with squamous cell carcinoma , a cancer of the abdomen, in early 2007 . Her fate triggered a worldwide media coverage when, on the initiative of Barbara Schett and others, a fundraising campaign was organized on the WTA Tour and the ATP World Tour , the proceeds of which were used to finance the expensive treatments. While Sandra could be cured, Daniela died in April 2008. Her illness was already too advanced.
