The Stade de France [ stat də fʁɑ̃s ] ( German Stadium of France ) is a rugby and football stadium with an athletics facility in the French city of Saint-Denis , a northern suburb of the capital Paris . It was opened in 1998 and is by far the largest stadium in the country with a capacity of 81,338 spectators. The construction costs were 364 million euros . It is of the UEFA in the stadium category 4 classified. The most important regular events are home games of the French national football team and the French national rugby union team , the final of the French football and league cups and the final of the rugby championship Top 14 . With the help of sliding grandstands, the Stade de France can also be prepared for athletics events such as the IAAF Diamond League , with the capacity being reduced to 75,000 spectators. Concerts and open-air shows are also held here regularly. At concerts, the stadium, including the interior, offers space for over 90,000 visitors.
construction
On July 2, 1992, FIFA appointed France to host the 1998 World Cup .
The French state committed to building a stadium with around 80,000 covered seats. One of the main goals in the stadium planning was to redevelop the Plaine Saint-Denis area, a long-neglected industrial wasteland. The Stade de France should serve as an attractive eye-catcher for the newly emerging city district with mixed residential and business zones. The architects of the stadium are Michel Macary , Aymeric Zublena , Michel Régembal and Claude Costantin . A consortium consisting of the companies Bouygues , GTM, Vinci and STF took over the logistical planning and construction of the stadium. Rüterbau from Langenhagen took over the construction of the roof. The groundbreaking ceremony took place on May 2, 1995, the official opening on January 28, 1998 as part of an international soccer match between France and Spain (1-0). The Stade de France replaced the Parc des Princes in Paris as the official national stadium . In 2002 the stadium received the “ Outstanding Structure Award ” from IABSE .
The Stade de France is planned as the Olympic stadium for the 2024 Summer Games . The stadium would have to be extensively modernized for the major event. The modernization will be significantly more expensive than planned. This was reported by the sports newspaper L'Équipe . In October 2018, the French Minister for Economic Affairs and Finance, Gérald Darmanin , confirmed that investments of 450 million euros would be necessary. If that were the case, the renovation would be around 40 million euros more expensive than the new building twenty years earlier. In the financial protocol for the Olympic Games 2024, only 50 million euros are calculated for the Stade de France, said Minister Darmanin. At the beginning of October 2018, the IOC approved the concept for the venues for the 2024 Games. A total budget of EUR 500 million was planned there.

Nine games of the 1998 World Cup were played at the Stade de France, including the final on July 12, when France beat Brazil 3-0 to secure the world championship. Other significant events included the 2003 World Athletics Championships , the Race of Champions motorsport event (2004 to 2006) and two UEFA Champions League finals (2000 and 2006). In addition, the final of the European Football Championship 2016 took place here, which hosts France lost 1-0 to Portugal.
Since no club team uses the Stade de France as their home stadium, it is empty for more than half of the year. Repeated attempts by the stadium consortium to win a professional football or rugby team as a permanent tenant have so far been unsuccessful. So Paris Saint-Germain preferred to stay in the Parc des Princes after many of its organized supporters, parent company Canal + and the city of Paris put pressure on it. However, during the renovation of the Prinzenpark in the run-up to the 2016 European Football Championship , the club will use the Stade de France as an alternative location.
Recent developments suggest that the consortium has found at least one part-time tenant, the Paris rugby union team Stade Français . The game against Stade Toulousain on October 15, 2005 counted 79,502 spectators, more than ever before in a French championship game. This also surpassed the Ligue 1 soccer record by more than 20,000; the final of the soccer league cup 2007 saw over 79,000 visitors. On October 14, 2006, 79,619 spectators came to the stadium for the game against Biarritz Olympique . The club president announced that he would continue to play two or three games a year at the Stade de France.
The attendance record for a sporting event is 80,009 spectators and was reached on March 6, 2006 at the rugby international match France– England during the Six Nations tournament . Another intensive use of the stadium was during the Rugby Union World Cup in 2007 .
The rock concerts by the Canadian-born French artist Mylène Farmer on September 11 and 12, 2009 also set a record, with 86,000 visitors each: both concerts were sold out within just two hours.
A record attendance by a non-French artist was set for the two concerts by the Irish rock band U2 on July 11th and 12th, 2009, each of which was attended by 93,000 people.
Terrorist attacks in November 2015
During the friendly match between France and Germany (final score 2: 0) on November 13, 2015, several very serious explosions occurred near the stadium, which were classified as terrorist attacks and could also be heard in the stadium. In order to avoid panic, the game was continued until the end and the spectators were then led out of the stadium in an orderly manner with the help of security forces. The assassins, who blew themselves up in front of the Stade de France with an explosive vest , originally wanted to get into the stadium with the bombs and detonate them there. However, this plan was thwarted by security forces who did not let the terrorists pass.
Games for the 2016 European Football Championship
On the occasion of the 2016 European Football Championship in France, seven games were played at the Stade de France, including the opening game and the final.

Transport links
The stadium is located directly at the junction of the A1 and A86 , but relatively few parking spaces have been built. Already in the planning phase, care was taken to ensure that the highest possible proportion of visitors came by public transport.
The stadium is accessed by three RER suburban train stations and the Métro in the immediate vicinity:
- La Plaine-Stade de France ( RER B )
- Stade de France - Saint-Denis ( RER D )
-
Saint-Denis - Porte de Paris ( line 13 )
On important occasions, ships also operate on the nearby Saint-Denis Canal.
