Complete medal table

The 17th World Athletics Championships took place from September 27th to October 6th, 2019 in the Qatari capital Doha . The decision was made on November 18, 2014 at a meeting of the IAAF World Athletics Federation in Monaco .

Candidate cities

The cities of Doha, Eugene and Barcelona applied for the athletics world title competitions .

Barcelona SpainSpain Spain 06th -

Doha had already applied to host the 2017 World Championships and, like Eugene, who hosted the 2014 Junior World Championships , is a station in the IAAF Diamond League . The President of the Spanish Athletics Federation commented that “by far the worst candidacy won” and Qatar bought the World Cup by offering the IAAF 37 million dollars (almost 30 million euros ) in addition to the original budget .

Medals

The design of the medals was presented to the public on August 27, 2019. On the front they show illustrations of the Khalifa International Stadium and on the back the skyline of Doha. 13 athletics disciplines are shown on both sides. They were made by hand by the Sndala company from Doha.

Participating Nations

Athletes from all 214 member associations of the IAAF took part in the world championships. Because the Russian Athletics Federation was not allowed to take part in international competitions, there was no team flying the Russian flag . Some Russian athletes started as Authorized Neutral Athletes . There was again a refugee team in 2019.

Qualification standards

To qualify for the 10,000 meters , the marathon , the walking events , relays and combined events were needed in the period from 7 March 2018 to 6 September of 2019. For all other competitions, the interval ranged from September 7, 2018 to September 6, 2019.

criticism

Corruption scandal

The competition was overshadowed by a corruption scandal. Lamine Diack , the former President of the IAAF , and his son Papa Massata , owner of a consulting agency , were accused of having built a corrupt network within the association. While Lamina Diack was already under house arrest , his son was still on the run and was wanted by international arrest warrant . In addition to the accusation of covering up positive doping samples against payment, there was also a preference for the Qatari committee in awarding the competition.

Human rights violations

According to a report by the human rights organization Amnesty International , the conditions for construction workers around the World Cup were “catastrophic” and Qatar was a “playground for unscrupulous employers”. Similar to the preparations for the 2022 World Cup , which will also take place in Qatar , workers would have been “kept like slaves” and would have received too little or no payment. There have already been hundreds of deaths among the guest workers, mostly from Nepal , Pakistan or India , report other NGOs .

Climatic problems

Already on the first days of the competition, the host IAAF received massive criticism from the participating athletes because of the local climatic conditions. For example, after several runners at the marathon and numerous walkers had to give up due to the enormous heat of up to 32 ° C and in some cases also had to seek medical treatment, this was referred to as an "ordeal". The multiple Olympic champion Haile Gebrselassie said: "God forbid, but people who run in such weather conditions could have died." Qatar was a warning "that it must not go on like this," said former DLV President Clemens Prokop . Climate conditions can "not be left out". Long-distance competitions would have to be relocated to other countries if necessary. The running association German Road Races (GRR) criticized the staging of the long-distance and walking races: “The health of the athletes is not taken into account at all.” GRR asked the DLV to express itself critically at the IAAF.

Cameras in starting blocks

The German sprinters Lückenkemper and Pinto criticized the cameras integrated in the starting blocks. Critics also sometimes compared the cameras to voyeuristic upskirting .

The so-called upper cameras film the athletes from below through the legs and, according to the IAAF, should present athletics in a “new and exciting way” by capturing the “intense moment” just before the race. So far, these cameras, developed by Seiko , have only been used in the 100-meter sprint and hurdles. In addition to the unusual camera perspective, the athletes also criticized the extraordinary length of the starting block due to the camera module.

The IAAF partially responded to the athletes' criticism and announced that it would not show close-ups of recordings in the direction and in the TV broadcast until the athletes were sitting in the block. The images are also not saved and are deleted every day.

The Athletes Germany Association criticized the lack of communication with the athletes when new technologies were introduced.
