Taoufik Makhloufi ( Arabic توفيق مخلوفي, DMG Tawfīq Maḫlūfī ; * April 29, 1988 in Souq Ahras ) is an Algerian middle and long distance runner .

Career

Makhloufi first attracted attention at the Pan-African Games in Maputo in 2011 when he won the gold medal in the 800-meter run and the bronze medal in the 1500-meter run . At the African Championships in 2012 in Porto-Novo , he won his final run over the 800-meter distance in 1: 43.88 minutes, thereby setting a personal best. At the 2012 Olympic Games in London , he started both over 800 and 1500 meters. In the 1500 meter competition, Makhloufi confidently qualified for the final run after first places in the preliminary and semi-finals. On the 800-meter course, he then gave up his race prematurely after 150 meters, whereupon he was disqualified by the IAAF for the rest of the games. The reason given was that Makhloufi had made no effort to conduct the race properly. Makhloufi then presented a medical certificate attesting that he had knee problems. As a result, the disqualification was lifted and Makhloufi was able to contest the 1,500 meter final. He won the race in a time of 3: 34.08 min.

At the 2014 African Championships in Marrakech , he won the bronze medal in the 800-meter run.

At the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro in 2016 , he took the silver medal behind David Rudisha in the 800-meter run with a new personal best of 1: 42.61 minutes . Over 1500 meters, he narrowly missed repeating his 2012 success. With eleven hundredths of a second behind the winner Matthew Centrowitz , he won his second silver of these games and thus the only medals for his home country Algeria.

At the 2019 World Athletics Championships in Doha , he won the silver medal in the 1500-meter run behind Timothy Cheruiyot .
