history
It was the venue for three group matches, a quarter-finals and the final of the 2004 European Football Championship . The stadium was approved by the UEFA in the stadium category 4 classified. The new building was built right next to the old arena built in 1954. The opening ceremonies were celebrated on October 25, 2003 with a friendly against the Uruguayan team Nacional Montevideo , from which Benfica emerged as the winner with 2-1 goals. On March 20, 2012, UEFA announced that the 2014 UEFA Champions League final would be played at the Benfica stadium.
Often referred to as A Luz by the Portuguese , or A Catedral by the supporters of Benfica , it got its name after the annual Nossa Senhora da Luz (Our Lady of Light) festival in the Carnide district . Lisbon itself is known as the Cidade da Luz (City of Light). The stadium has been the home ground of SL Benfica since 2003 and was built right next to the club's old Estádio da Luz , which was the home ground for the previous 49 years. The old arena with a capacity of 120,000 and the new stadium are also known as the “cathedral”. The roof made of polycarbonate , which is held in place by arches 43 meters high , ensures intense sunlight.
