← UEFA Champions League 2009/10
|
|
The new Wembley Stadium offers 90,000 seats.
The 2010/11 UEFA Champions League was the 19th season of the most important European competition for club teams in football under this name and the 56th overall. 76 clubs from 52 regional associations took part in the competition. Only Liechtenstein did not have a representative.
The season began with the first qualifying round on June 29, 2010 and ended with the final at London's Wembley Stadium on May 28, 2011. There, FC Barcelona beat Manchester United 3-1.
For the third time in a row, Argentina's Lionel Messi from winner FC Barcelona was the top scorer of the competition with 12 goals.
qualification
In the draws, the teams were divided into seeded (stronger) and unseeded (weaker) teams according to their club coefficient (KK) and drawn among themselves.
1st qualifying round
The draw for the games took place on June 21, 2010. The first and second qualifying rounds were drawn together. The games took place on 29./30. June and 6/7. July.
(1) The game was rated with a 3-0 home defeat due to the unplayability of the place.
2nd qualifying round
The games took place on 13./14. and 20./21. July. Before the draw, the 34 participants were divided into three groups, presumably to save the clubs travel expenses. The seeding list was then used within these groups. The draw on June 21st resulted in the following pairings. The Danish champions only started in the third qualifying round, as the defending champions qualified directly for the group stage through their national league. In return, the masters of the Faroe Islands and Luxembourg moved up.
3rd qualifying round
The draw for the matches took place on July 16, 2010. The games took place on 27./28. July and 3rd / 4th August. From the third qualifying round onwards, there were two separate lottery pots: In the champions path, national champions were drawn only against other national champions, whereas “pursuers”, i.e. second, third or fourth placed clubs, played in the placement path and were drawn only against other “pursuers” . In the Champions Way, two groups of ten participants each were formed before the seeding list was used for the draw. Losing teams moved to the play-offs of the 2010/11 UEFA Europa League .

Play-offs
The last qualifying round is called “play-offs” for the purpose of better marketing opportunities. From this round onwards, all games will be marketed centrally by UEFA in order to generate greater media attention and thus increased advertising income.
The matches were drawn on August 6, 2010. The games took place on 17./18. and 24./25. August. Losing teams will play in the 2010/11 UEFA Europa League group stage .

Placement route
Group stage
32 teams from 18 nations take part in the group stage. 22 teams were directly qualified, plus ten clubs (five each via the champions path and the placement path) from the qualifying rounds.
The group winners and runners-up qualified for the round of 16, the group third played in the round of 32 of the UEFA Europa League , the group fourth were eliminated from the competition. If two or more teams were tied after the group matches, the placement was determined by the following criteria:
- Number of points in direct comparison
- Goal difference in direct comparison
- Number of away goals in direct comparison
- Goal difference from all group matches
- higher number of goals scored
- Club coefficients
For the drawing of the groups, the teams were divided according to their club coefficients in descending order into four pots of eight teams each, Pot 1 contained the defending champion at the top and then the seven strongest clubs, Pot 4 the eight weakest representatives. If the clubs favored according to the club coefficient cannot qualify for the group stage, teams from lower pots could move up to higher ones. For example, Olympique Lyon moved from Pot 2 to Pot 1 because Sevilla FC failed in the play-off round. No two representatives of a nation were drawn into the same group, as purely national matches in the Champions League are only allowed from the quarter-finals. The group stage draw took place on August 26, 2010 at 6:00 p.m. in Monaco and resulted in the following groups:
