qualification

The division into the individual qualifying rounds is based on the UEFA access list. The order of the associations is determined by the association coefficients of the UEFA five-year ranking 2018/2019. Since last year's defending champions qualified for the Champions League have already qualified via national competitions, there will be subsequent postponements in the published access list.

The teams with the higher club coefficient of the UEFA five-year ranking 2019/20 are seeded. If the club coefficients are the same, the order is determined by the evaluation points achieved by the teams in the previous season or the following years. If the previous round has not yet been completed at the time of the draw for the respective qualifying round, the higher value of the two teams in the respective outstanding pairings will be used for the seeding list.

All matches up to and including the 3rd qualifying round will be decided in one game. With the exception of the preliminary round, which was played in the form of a tournament in Nyon, the home right will be drawn by lots. The play-offs are played regularly with home and return legs.

Due to the postponements of the 2019/20 season and the 2020/21 season due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the 2020/21 season will begin before the end of the 2019/20 season. Therefore, the changes to the access list that should be made based on which teams are the Champions League and Europa League defending champions are unsafe after previous qualifying round games have been played and / or their draws have been made. How the changes will be implemented in this case has yet to be decided by UEFA.

Preliminary round

The preliminary round was to take place in a small elimination tournament from August 8 to August 11, 2020 at the UEFA headquarters in Nyon . Ultimately, however, only the two semi-finals were played on August 8, while the final of the preliminary round was not played due to positive COVID-19 tests.

The three losers moved to the second qualifying round (Champions Path) of the 2020/21 UEFA Europa League , the winner to the first qualifying round of the 2020/21 UEFA Champions League. Since the draw took place before the end of two leagues, the respective country coefficient 2018/2019 was used for the setting instead of the club coefficients.

Group stage

The defending champions of the UEFA Champions League and the winners of the UEFA Europa League as well as the champions of the leagues from 1st to 6th place in the UEFA five-year ranking were drawn from pot 1, regardless of their club coefficient, and formed the respective group head. Since FC Bayern Munich was twice qualified for pot 1 both as defending champion and as Germany's national champion, FC Porto moved up from 7th place as champions of the league in the first lottery pot. All other teams were allocated to pots 2 to 4 in descending order according to their club coefficient and drawn. The lottery procedure is not based solely on chance, rather the solution is intervened with the help of a computer: The groups are divided into two group halves “red” (groups A – D) and “blue” (groups E – H). Not only are several representatives of a nation not drawn into the same group, they are also evenly distributed between the group halves, since one half plays alternately on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, and representatives of a nation should play on different days if possible.

The draw took place in Nyon on October 1st, 2020 .

32 teams from 15 national associations took part in the group stage. 26 teams qualified directly, plus six clubs (four via the champions path and two via the placement path) from the qualifying rounds.

The group winners and runners-up qualified for the round of 16, while the thirds in the group continued to play in the round of 32 of the UEFA Europa League . If two or more teams were tied after the group matches, the placement was determined by the following criteria:

  1. Number of points in direct comparison
  2. Goal difference in direct comparison
  3. Number of goals in direct comparison
  4. Number of away goals in direct comparison
  5. If, after applying criteria 1-4, two or more teams still occupy the same place in the table, criteria 1-4 are reapplied for these teams. If this does not result in a definitive placement, criteria 6–12 will be applied.
  6. Goal difference from all group matches
  7. higher number of goals scored
  8. higher number of away goals scored
  9. higher number of wins
  10. higher number of away wins
  11. lower number of minus points through yellow and red cards (yellow card 1 minus point, red card 3 minus points, yellow-red card 3 minus points)
  12. Club coefficients
