Career

In the club

After playing as a youth player at Lierse SK and RSC Anderlecht , he signed a professional contract with RSC Anderlecht at the beginning of the 2009/10 season at the age of 16. There he was quickly part of the regular formation and was successful as a goal scorer (15 league goals in 25 games). In his sixth Europa League appearance, he scored his first two goals at European level in the 3-1 away win of RSC Anderlecht at Ajax Amsterdam , with which he contributed to the group victory of his club. On December 20, 2009 he was voted the greatest Belgian sporting talent of the year. He took first place in front of the racing driver Bertrand Baguette and the athlete Anne Zagré . With 15 goals he was the top scorer in Belgium as a youth B in the 2009/10 season and had a share in winning the Belgian football championship in the same season.

In August 2011 Lukaku moved to Chelsea and signed a five-year contract; he got the shirt number 18. In his first season Lukaku got very little playing time. In order to gain match practice, he was loaned to league rivals West Bromwich Albion for the 2012/13 season. In the Supercup final against FC Bayern Munich on August 30, 2013, he missed the decisive final penalty of the penalty shoot-out.

On September 2, 2013 Lukaku moved on the last day of the transfer window within the league until the end of the 2013/14 season on loan to Everton . In the league, he scored 15 goals in 31 games and was signed for the 2014/15 season . He signed a five-year contract and cost 28 million pounds sterling (around 35.4 million euros) transfer, which made him the most expensive purchase of the club to date. Lukaku also scored regularly in the following seasons: after ten Premier League goals in 36 appearances in the 2014/15 season, 18 goals in 37 games in the 2015/16 season and 25 goals in 37 games in the 2016/17 season , with which he finished second in the scorers list behind Harry Kane (29 goals).

He moved to Manchester United for the 2017/18 season . He received a five-year contract and, with a transfer fee of around 85 million euros, became one of the most expensive players in the world .

For the 2019/20 season he moved to Italy to Inter Milan , where he received a contract that ran until June 2024. There he was repeatedly exposed to racist hostility.

National team

On March 3, 2010 Lukaku played his first international match for the Belgian national team in a friendly against Croatia . He scored his first two goals when beating Russia in a friendly on November 17, 2010 in Voronezh . The game against Luxembourg on May 26, 2014, in which Lukaku scored three goals, was not recognized as an official international match, as Belgium coach Marc Wilmots made seven changes. On July 1, 2014, he scored his first World Cup goal for Belgium in the last 16 duel against the USA in extra time to make it 2-0. The team failed in the quarter-finals to Argentina with 0: 1.

At the European Championships in France in 2016 , he was included in the Belgian squad. In all five tournament games he was part of the first team. In the second group game against Ireland he scored two of the goals for the 3-0 win. In the quarterfinals, the team failed as favorites to Wales.

At the 2018 World Cup , he was again part of the Belgian squad . In the first two group matches against Panama (3-0) and Tunisia (5-2) he scored two goals each.
