Edgar Schmitt (born April 29, 1963 in Rittersdorf ) is a German soccer coach and former soccer player .

Career

player

After stints at FC Bitburg , FSV Salmrohr , 1. FC Saarbrücken and Eintracht Trier , the striker only made the leap into professional football at the age of 28 when he switched to Eintracht Frankfurt in 1991 . Two years later he joined the Karlsruher SC , where he spent his most successful time. After his engagement at KSC, Schmitt was under contract with SC Fortuna Köln for two years .

He was never forgotten by the UEFA Cup game on November 2, 1993, when KSC faced Valencia CF in the second round - at the time leaders of the Spanish Primera División . The Badeners lost the first leg in Valencia 3-1, so progressing ahead of the second leg seemed unlikely. In a sensational game that would go down in history as a miracle of the wildlife park , the KSC defeated Valencia 7-0 in front of 25,000 spectators in the wildlife park stadium. Edgar Schmitt scored four of the seven goals, which earned him the nickname Euro-Eddy . Just a week earlier, Schmitt had suffered a serious car accident in which he rolled over four times. Because of this accident, Schmitt was also called Edgar 'Looping' Schmitt .

Trainer

In 2005, Schmitt passed the soccer teacher exam and thus acquired the right to train professional teams. On January 15, 2007 Schmitt was coach of VfR Aalen in the then third-class Regionalliga Süd , which at that time was in tenth place in the table. He signed a one and a half year contract with the Aalen team. In the second half of the season Schmitt led the team up to fourth place, at the end of the season they finished sixth. In the following season, the VfR under Schmitt was on the promotion ranks for almost the entire season, only in the final phase of the promotion to the second division, which had already been believed safe, was still gambled. So they finished fourth in the table at the end of the season, which qualified the VfR for the newly founded 3rd division . On May 22, 2008, Schmitt's contract was extended by two years. The Aalen team started the new season with one win, two draws and, most recently, one defeat. Since the five points from the first four games did not meet the requirements of the club's management, which was aiming for promotion to the second Bundesliga, Schmitt and his assistant coach Rainer Kraft were released with immediate effect on August 27, 2008 and replaced by Jürgen Kohler .

As a result, Edgar Schmitt took over the league competitor Stuttgarter Kickers on September 21, 2008 as the successor to Stefan Minkwitz, who was on leave . At this point the Kickers were in last place in the table with just one point from seven games. After the club was still in 20th place in the table with 25 points after the 32nd matchday and had only reached 19th place twice, Schmitt himself resigned from his position on April 14, 2009.

On March 31, 2010, the sixth division KFC Uerdingen 05 secured the services of Edgar Schmitt. The KFC, which had strengthened enormously during the winter break (among others with Aílton , Erhan Albayrak ), aimed for immediate promotion to the NRW-Oberliga with Schmitt. However, this one was missed. On May 16, 2010, Schmitt announced that he would be leaving KFC at the end of the season for private reasons.

In January 2011 Schmitt returned as a scout to VfR Aalen after the previous chief scout Michael Schiele , whom Schmitt had trained as a player until his dismissal in 2008, had been appointed assistant coach by the new head coach Ralph Hasenhüttl . As a scout, he was mainly responsible for observing other teams. That, he went around nine months after long before September 11, 2011, the Association division side TSV Essingen from about six kilometers away from Aalen community Essingen , at this time as newly promoted Table, the commitment announced Schmitt as the new coach of Sechstligisten. On September 10, 2012, Schmitt resigned from his coaching position at TSV Essingen for professional reasons.

In October 2019 he ran unsuccessfully for the office of KSC Vice President.
