European Champion Clubs' Cup 1956/57

The European Cup of National Champions 1957/58 was the 3rd edition of the competition. 24 club teams took part, including 23 national champions from the previous season and the Spanish runners-up with Sevilla FC , as Spanish champions Real Madrid were automatically qualified as defending champions.

The participants played in a pure cup mode with (except for the finals) back and forth games for the crown of European club football. In the event of a tie, there was a playoff in a neutral place; if it ended in a draw, the winner was determined by tossing a coin . 16 clubs had to start in the preliminary round, another eight started in the round of 16.

The final took place on May 28, 1958 in the Heysel Stadium in Brussels in front of 67,000 spectators. Real Madrid also won the third edition of the competition 3-2 after extra time against AC Milan . The top scorer was the Argentine Alfredo Di Stéfano of Real Madrid with ten goals.

This European Cup season was overshadowed by the crash of British-European-Airways flight 609 on February 6, 1958 at Munich-Riem Airport , when the Manchester United team on the return flight from the quarter-final second leg in Belgrade against Red Star (final score 3: 3) found. The machine shot over the runway when attempting to take off. 23 people were killed in the accident, including eight United players.
