Seydou Keita (born January 16, 1980 in Bamako ) is a former Malian football player . The midfielder is the record player and record scorer for the Malian national team .

Career

The beginnings

In 1997, when Seydou Keita was 17, he moved from his Malian homeland to France, where he played in the youth team at Olympique Marseille . There he was brought into the professional team in 1999, but was unable to assert himself because, although he had three appearances in the Champions League , he could only play six season games. He then went to the second division club FC Lorient , with whom he immediately achieved promotion to Division 1 . Although he was able to maintain his regular place the following year and win the French Cup with the Bretons , he rose again with the club in 2002 as bottom of the table.

The last few years

Then Seydou Keita moved to RC Lens , for which he played the following five years. With Lens, Keita was able to qualify for an international competition in four out of five seasons (three times the UEFA Cup and one time the Champions League ) and was ultimately the captain of his team. In the summer of 2007 Seydou Keita signed a long-term contract with the Spanish first division club and two-time UEFA Cup and Cup winners 2007, Sevilla FC . There he showed remarkable performances and scored four goals in 31 games. He then moved to the 2008/2009 season for a transfer fee of € 14 million to FC Barcelona , where he signed a four-year contract. In his first season with the Catalans, Keita won the triple , playing in 29 of 38 league games, seven of them over the full season. In the 2009/10 season , Keita had gotten used to the playing system of FC Barcelona and became a fixture in the midfield of the team that successfully defended the Spanish championship at the end of the season. Keita also ran as a left winger this season and scored three goals in the 6-1 league game against Real Saragossa . At the beginning of the 2010/11 season, Keita's contract was extended to 2014. On July 7, 2012, FC Barcelona announced that Keita would leave the club with immediate effect. According to media reports, Keita pulled a release clause that allows him to leave the club for free if he plays less than half of the season's games. He left FC Barcelona after four seasons in which he won 14 titles. In July 2012 he moved to the Chinese first division club Dalian Aerbin . He left the club in November 2013 after 41 games across all competitions, in which he scored ten goals.

On January 30, 2014, Keita returned to the Primera División for Valencia CF. He signed a contract until the end of the 2013/14 season with an option for another season. Keita did not make use of this option after eleven league appearances in which he scored a goal.

For the 2014/15 season , Keita moved to the Italian Serie A at AS Roma . He signed a contract until the end of the season.

For the 2016/17 season he moved to Qatar to al-Jaish . After one season he ended his playing career.

International

For Mali, he already took part with the U-20 selection in the 1999 World Junior Cup, in which he and his team took an excellent third place and was voted the best player of the tournament.

Seydou Keita is the current Malian international . He made his debut for Mali in April 2000 against Libya . In Keita's first Africa Cup participation in his home country Mali in 2002 , Keita equalized George Weah's goal in the opening game against Liberia shortly before the end of the game and thus scored the 1-1 final. Mali reached the semi-finals in this tournament, where they lost to the eventual winners Cameroon . At the 2004 African Cup of Nations, in which Keita played four games, Mali was again in the semi-finals. For the Africa Cup 2006 his team was not qualified and at the Africa Cup 2008 , in which Keita was in the starting eleven at all games in Mali, his team was eliminated in the preliminary round. Two years later, Mali was drawn into the group of the host Angola at the Africa Cup . In the opening game, the hosts led 4-0 in the 79th minute, before Mali fought back 4: 4 with two goals from Keita. But also at this tournament Keita and his team were eliminated in the preliminary round.
