life and career

2005–2009: Junior career and first experiences as a professional

Jerzy Janowicz started playing tennis at the age of five. In 2005 he played in an international junior tournament for the first time, and a year later he won his first title in Saudi Arabia . His greatest successes as a junior were reaching the finals at the 2007 US Open and the 2008 French Open . In the junior world rankings he rose to 5th place during this time.

In June 2007 he took part in a future tournament in the senior category for the first time and was included in the tennis world rankings for the first time two months later . In March 2008 Janowicz won his first future title in Switzerland. Then he got a wildcard for the ATP tournament in Warsaw in June 2008 , but lost in the first round in two sets against Juan Mónaco, who was third . A month later Jerzy Janowicz joined the Polish Davis Cup team for the first time and was able to contribute to the 4-1 win over Belarus a single win against the former top 20 player Max Mirny . In the further course of the year he won two more future tournaments and also reached the semi-finals of a Challenger tournament in Szczecin for the first time . In the world rankings, it rose by over 1000 places to 339th place in the course of 2008.

The year 2009 began for Jerzy Janowicz with a successful qualification for the ATP tournament in Marseille in February 2009. There he lost his first round match in three extremely tight sets against Andreas Seppi . In the Davis Cup encounter against Belgium in March 2009, Janowicz could not prevent Poland's 4-1 defeat despite a victory over Kristof Viegen . In May 2009 he reached two future finals in a row in Poland, one of which he was able to win. After a semifinal participation at the Challenger tournament in Poznan in July 2009, Janowicz got a wildcard for the ATP tournament in Washington , but lost in the first round in three sets against Marc Gicquel . At the US Open 2009 Janowicz tried for the first time to qualify for a Grand Slam tournament, but failed in the third qualifying round to Somdev Devvarman . In September 2009 he contributed to the 3-2 win over Great Britain in the Davis Cup to a victory over Daniel Evans , but he lost his second individual against the world number three Andy Murray . In October 2009 he failed at the ATP tournaments in Stockholm and Lyon each in the third qualifying round. In the world rankings, he had moved up to 229th place this year, but fell back to 319th place at the end of the year.

2010–2011: Entry into the Top 200 and first Challenger title

In February 2010 Jerzy Janowicz won his fifth future title in Azerbaijan. In April 2010 he got a wildcard for the Houston ATP tournament , but lost in straight sets to Wayne Odesnik . In June 2010, two more future titles followed in Poland, followed by a successful qualification for the ATP tournament in Båstad in July 2010. He lost in the first main round to Ervin Eleskovic, who also started as a qualifier . At the US Open 2010 Janowicz failed as in the previous year in the qualification, but he was able to win his first title in September 2010 in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence in his first Challenger final against Édouard Roger-Vasselin . He then entered the top 200 in the world rankings for the first time. In the Davis Cup game against Latvia Janowicz lost his first individual against Ernests Gulbis , but was able to win the decisive last individual against Kārlis Lejnieks and thus secure Poland 3-2 victory. In October 2010 he was able to win nine matches in a row in two consecutive future tournaments in Belarus: After he had won the first tournament, he could only be stopped in a narrow final in the second tournament. In November 2010 Janowicz reached a Challenger final in Salzburg for the second time in his career, but lost it in three tight sets against Conor Niland . Nevertheless, he then achieved his best world ranking position to date with rank 161.

2011 started for Jerzy Janowicz with a narrow loss to Bobby Reynolds in the second qualifying round of the Australian Open . In early February 2011 he reached the semi-finals at the Challenger tournament in Courmayeur , where he was eliminated by Gilles Müller . In March 2011 Janowicz lost in the Davis Cup game against Israel in five sets against Amir Weintraub and was unable to prevent Poland from losing 3-2 despite the subsequent victory over top 100 player Dudi Sela . After being eliminated in the first qualifying round at the French Open , Jerzy Janowicz reached the third round of qualification at Wimbledon , where he had to admit defeat Martin Fischer 6-8 in the fifth set after more than four hours of play . In July 2011, Janowicz reached his first Challenger final of the year in Poznan , but he lost in straight sets to Rui Machado . In August 2011 Jerzy Janowicz was able to qualify for an ATP tournament for the first time in over a year in Kitzbühel , but lost in the first round in three sets against the later semi-finalist João Souza . In the world rankings, he then achieved his best ranking to date with 140th place. The rest of the year passed without any further highlights.

2012–2013: Grand Slam debut, Paris Masters and Wimbledon semi-finals

In February 2012 Jerzy Janowicz reached the final at the Challenger tournament in Wolfsburg , but lost it very narrowly in three sets against Igor Sijsling . At the beginning of May 2012 Janowicz won his first Challenger title in doubles together with Jürgen Zopp in Tunis . Just a week later, he won his first individual title that year at the Challenger tournament in Rome . He defeated three top 100 players in the course of the tournament with Ernests Gulbis , Rui Machado and Gilles Müller in the final . After just failing in the last qualifying round at the French Open , Janowicz was able to qualify for a Grand Slam tournament for the first time in Wimbledon in June 2012 . In the first main round he prevailed in four sets against Simone Bolelli , who also started from the qualification , before winning against Ernests Gulbis in a five set match in the second round. In the third round he met Florian Mayer, who was 31st . There he lost in five sets after he could not use two match points. In July, two more individual titles followed on the Challenger Tour, which he won in Scheveningen and Posen. His breakthrough on the World Tour came at the end of October at the Masters in Paris . Janowicz survived the qualification against Dmitri Tursunow and Florent Serra without losing a set , before winning just as clearly against Philipp Kohlschreiber and Marin Čilić in the first and second round . In the last sixteen he defeated Olympic champion Andy Murray in three sets, while Murray even had a match point in the second set. In the subsequent quarter-finals, Janowicz turned back against Janko Tipsarević . Tipsarević finally had to give up in the third set due to injury, making Janowicz the first Pole to move into the semifinals of a Masters. Against Gilles Simon he stayed there 6: 4, 7: 5 again without losing a set. In the final he was ultimately defeated by the Spaniard David Ferrer 4: 6, 3: 6. With this success Janowicz moved from position 69 in the world rankings to position 26.

The 2013 season was stable for Janowicz in the first half of the year without winning a single title. At the Australian Open he reached the third round for the first time. In the following tournaments, however, he never got beyond the third round. Only at the Masters in Rome was he able to reach the quarterfinals after victories over Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Richard Gasquet , where he was defeated by Roger Federer in two sets. He had previously reached the finals of a double competition in Indian Wells for the first time in his career. At the side of Treat Huey, he was defeated in three sets to the world rankings Bob and Mike Bryan . As in the first Grand Slam of the year, he reached the third round in Roland Garros . At Wimbledon , he became the first Pole in history to reach the semi-finals of a Grand Slam tournament in men's singles. There he was defeated by Andy Murray in four sets. This success enabled him to advance to 17th place in the world rankings. After good results in the following tournaments such as the Canada Masters , he improved even further to 14th place. At the US Open , he lost in three straight sets against Máximo González in the first round .

2017–2020: Long injury break and comeback

Due to injuries to his foot and knee, Jerzy Janowicz did not play any more tournaments from 2017 to 2020 and therefore even fell out of the world rankings. At the third tournament after his comeback in 2020, he reached the final of the Challenger tournament in Pau , equipped with a wildcard, which he lost to former top 10 player Ernests Gulbis . Due to the successful performance, he was able to work his way back to 461 in the world rankings. Since 2020 he has also been working with the Austrian tennis trainer Günter Bresnik .
