Marc Gicquel (born March 30, 1977 in Tunis , Tunisia ) is a former French tennis player .

Career

Gicquel and his family moved from the Tunisian capital Tunis to France at an early age. He started playing tennis at the age of seven. In 1999 he made his debut on the ATP World Tour , but it wasn't until two years later that he finally decided to take up professional tennis and not study physics.

In 2006 Gicquel reached the second round of the US Open after victories over the former number one in the world, Juan Carlos Ferrero , and the former French Open winner Gastón Gaudio . There he was defeated by world number one Roger Federer in three sets. In the same year he reached the final in Lyon , in which he was defeated by Richard Gasquet . This was followed by another finals in 2007 and 2008. On September 8, 2008, Gicquel was ranked 37th in the world , his highest ranking. He celebrated four tournament wins in doubles on the ATP World Tour, he was also successful nine times in singles and four times in doubles in the lower-class Challenger tournaments . In 2014 he ended his career after the Challenger tournament in Rennes . Nevertheless, he took part again in a Challenger in Saint-Brieuc in 2015 .
