Roger Federer [ ˈrɔdʒər ˈfɛdərər ] (born August 8, 1981 in Basel ; resident in Berneck ) is a Swiss tennis player .

With a total of 310 weeks, including the record number of 237 weeks in a row, Federer led the world rankings the longest. He was also the oldest player to date. The years 2004 to 2007 and 2009 also ended Federer as world number one. He holds the record for most of the men's singles Grand Slam titles (20) and has won 103 singles and eight doubles to date.

Federer is the only player to have won three Grand Slam titles three times in one season (2004, 2006 and 2007). He is one of eight players who have won all four Grand Slam tournaments at least once in their career. With eight individual titles, he is the record winner of the Wimbledon Championships . He won the Australian Open six times, the US Open five times and the French Open once . He is also the record holder with six wins at the ATP Finals . In addition, he won 28 Masters tournaments and is the record winner of the ATP Tour 500 series with 24 titles .

Federer has been voted World Sportsman of the Year five times (from 2005 to 2008 and 2018) and thus more often than any other athlete.

Even during his playing days, tennis experts often rate Federer as the best player in the history of this sport.

Personal

Roger Federer, the son of a Swiss (Robert Federer) and a South African (Lynette), grew up with his two years older sister Diana in the Basel suburbs of Riehen and Wasserhaus in Münchenstein . According to Federer, the English pronunciation of his first name is related to the origin of his mother, which does not correspond to the French pronunciation variant [ rɔˈʒeː ] that is otherwise common in Switzerland . In addition to German, Federer also speaks fluent English and French and can therefore easily switch between these languages in press conferences or interviews. In addition to the Swiss, he also has a South African passport.

His wife Mirka Federer-Vavrinec , a former Swiss tennis player, had to end her career in 2002 because of a foot injury. The two met on the sidelines of the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney. On April 11, 2009, they married in Riehen near Basel with close family and friends, and on July 23, 2009 they became parents of twin daughters. The twin sons of the two were born on May 6, 2014. Vavrinec is thought to have had considerable mental influence on Federer.

Roger Federer had himself declared unfit for military service for medical reasons. This led to discussions in the Swiss public, as for years more and more men of one age group have been declared unfit. (In 2006, just 65% were fit for work in Switzerland.)

In December 2003, Federer set up a foundation that financially supports aid projects for children, mainly in South Africa. The purpose of the foundation is to promote youth sport in general as well as young sporting talent from financially disadvantaged backgrounds. Federer was also involved in tsunami aid projects after the earthquake in the Indian Ocean in 2004 and played a number of benefit tournaments to support those affected. In April 2006, Roger Federer was the first Swiss to be appointed international UNICEF ambassador . Because of this voluntary commitment, he was awarded the Kind Award by the Kinderlachen association in 2006.

Federer has lived in Valbella since 2015 , where he moved from Bäch . He has another residence in Dubai .

Tennis career

Childhood and Adolescence (1984–1998)

In contrast to other greats in tennis history, Roger Federer did not make international headlines at a young age. His parents weren't your typical tennis parents, he chose this path himself. As in his later professional career, he was more characterized by continuous development. Spectacular successes came in late youth. So there were no large-scale reports like with tennis talent like Andre Agassi , Martina Hingis or Steffi Graf . The Swiss began playing tennis at the age of three and joined the TC Old Boys tennis club at the age of eight. There his development was significantly advanced by the trainers Adolf Kacovský and Peter Carter.

After his first national successes, Federer decided at the age of twelve to concentrate fully on tennis and not further promote his talent in football - he was a junior at FC Concordia Basel . In 1995 he moved to the Swiss national training center in Ecublens . From now on, the Swiss association sponsored Federer, who won seven Swiss junior championship titles between 1995 and 1997. In 1995 he only reached the round of 16 at the Orange Bowl in Miami , the last major international junior tournament of the year. Nevertheless, he considered his performance as the greatest international success to date. From 1997 onwards Federer took part in international tournaments and won his first major international junior title in Prato in May.

During this time, the decision was made to leave school at the age of 16 in favor of a career in tennis. Federer took the risk and the breakthrough on the junior tour followed in 1998; in January he reached the semi-finals of the Australian Open and Wimbledon won titles in singles and doubles. These successes enabled him to participate in tournaments on the professional tour. He made his debut on the ATP Tour in Gstaad in July 1998 ; in September he reached his first quarter-finals among the professionals in Toulouse. By winning the Orange Bowl in December, his last junior tournament, Federer secured first place in the junior ranking at the end of the year. This was not only a great prestige success for him, but also the springboard for the final entry into the professional tour.

Beginning of professional career (1999–2000)

The reputation as a junior world champion helped the now 17-year-old to gain a foothold on the professional tour. In the course of his first professional season he received a total of eight wildcards for tournaments on the ATP Tour. As a result, he was able to surpass his goal of being among the top 200 players in the world at the end of the season. On his Davis Cup debut, Federer managed a victory in the individual, which he had a share in the progress of his country to the quarter-finals of the competition. In the summer he took part in Roland Garros and Wimbledon for the first time with the professionals, where he was eliminated in the first round. Later that year he played his strengths in indoor tournaments. He reached his first semi-finals on the ATP Tour in Vienna and thus made it into the top 100 players in the world rankings ; He finished the season in 64th place.

For the 2000 season, Federer set himself the goal of establishing himself among the top 50 players in the world. Furthermore, he showed himself to be an indoor specialist, even if he was successful in outdoor tournaments for the first time. At the beginning of the year he reached his first final on the professional tour in Marseille, which he lost to his older compatriot Marc Rosset . After the leap into the top 50 in the world was already completed, the season target was revised up to 25th place. In April, Federer announced the separation from the Swiss association and thus also from his coach Peter Carter. He justified the step by saying that he was now able to stand on his own two feet and had therefore chosen this path. As the new coach, he hired the Swede Peter Lundgren , who recognized the talent but still saw development potential in his 18-year-old protégé.

In the summer Federer suffered a few first round defeats and his record at important tournaments remained modest. Nevertheless, his association nominated him for the Olympic Games in Sydney , where he reached the semifinals. In both games for a medal, however, he suffered a defeat. At his home tournament in Basel he reached his second final on the ATP Tour. There he was defeated by the Swede Thomas Enqvist . With 29th place at the end of the year, he just missed his goal of the season. In winter, he hired Pierre Paganini as a fitness coach in order to meet the demands of the world's best physically.

From first title to Wimbledon success (2001-2003)

With the aim of achieving his first tournament victory in his third professional season and placing himself among the top 15 players in the world, Federer started the 2001 season. After winning the 2001 Hopman Cup with Martina Hingis in January, it was fulfilled in February the first goal. In the third attempt, Federer won a tournament final in Milan against Julien Boutter for the first time . In the Davis Cup, with two individual victories, he played a decisive role in Switzerland's first round victory against the USA. In the quarter-finals of the competition against France, he declared that he would no longer participate in the Davis Cup under Davis Cup coach Jakob Hlasek in the future. A few weeks later, the contract with Hlasek was terminated, which testified to Federer's increased importance in Swiss tennis. In the following clay court season he reached his first quarter-finals in a Grand Slam tournament. As number 15 in the world, he started at Wimbledon. There he met seven-time title holder Pete Sampras in the round of 16 . After five sets, the 19-year-old Swiss was the winner and ended Sampras' streak of 31 victories in a row at Wimbledon. However , he lost the following quarter-finals against the British Tim Henman . In the course of the tournament, Federer suffered a groin injury, which forced him to take a seven-week break. He was not fit again until the US Open in late summer, but lost to Andre Agassi in the round of 16. A final in Basel during the following indoor season was not enough to make the eight best players of the season possible for the Tennis Masters Cup after the results of the first half of the season . Federer finished the season in 13th place in the world rankings.

Roger Federer at the US Open in 2002

At the beginning of the 2002 season he won his second career title in Sydney. At the Australian Open, however, he lost in the round of 16, as well as in the final in Milan. In March he reached his first final in a Masters Series tournament in Miami, but lost the game against Andre Agassi in four sets. A few weeks later the second final participation in a tournament of this category in Hamburg followed. This time Federer decided the final against the Russian Marat Safin for himself. The 20-year-old Federer traveled to Paris as the second-placed player in the Champions Race . Here he surprisingly failed in the first round to Hicham Arazi . He also retired in the opening round at Wimbledon. The Swiss, classified by the bookmakers as the fifth best player in the tournament, was defeated by Croatian Mario Ančić in three sets .

In the meantime, there was open talk of a Grand Slam blockade at Federer. The Swiss (who was already traded as a future multiple Grand Slam winner) rarely appeared to be able to play his best tennis in the four tournaments in the highest category. Up until the US Open, Federer won only one match in four tournaments. His game suffered from the thought of the accidental death of his former coach Peter Carter in South Africa in early August 2002. In New York Federer was eliminated again in the second round. Nevertheless, he managed to qualify for the Tennis Masters Cup, as he always reached at least the quarter-finals in five tournaments in the indoor season and won his fourth tournament victory in Vienna. He succeeded in qualifying for the tournament as the only player alongside Carlos Moyá without a Grand Slam quarter-final participation in the course of the season. Federer won his three group games and reached the semi-finals against world number one Lleyton Hewitt . In a close game he gave up some chances and finally lost them 5-7 in the third set. He finished the season in 6th place in the world rankings.

As a goal for the 2003 season, coach Lundgren set the leap into the top four of the world rankings. In addition, Federer continued to give victory in a Grand Slam tournament as a declared goal. At the first chance he lost in the round of 16 of the Australian Open against David Nalbandian ; after five sets he was inferior to the Argentine. In the next few months he reached four finals on the tour and won his first season titles in Marseille, Dubai and Munich. In Rome he could not use the chance for a second Masters Series title. In the Davis Cup, Federer won five of his first six matches, reaching the semi-finals in this competition with Switzerland for the first time in his career. As in the previous year, the fifth in the world rankings was one of the tournament favorites before the French Open. After another first round defeat (against Luis Horna ) in a Grand Slam tournament, however, he saw himself exposed to ridicule from the press. The cause of Federer's failure at major tournaments was attributed to a mental weakness.

After the French Open, the Swiss began preparing for the tournament in Wimbledon at the Gerry Weber Open in Halle. There he won his fourth title of the season and thus set a new personal season best. At Wimbledon he was ranked third by the bookmakers that year and for the first time in eight appearances he reached the quarter-finals at a Grand Slam tournament. After he had been able to cure a back injury at the beginning of the second week of the tournament through long breaks in rain, he met Andy Roddick in the semifinals . In three sets, Federer achieved 61 winning strokes with only twelve unforced mistakes, which made him move into the first Grand Slam final of his career. The Australian Mark Philippoussis forced him into a tie-break twice in the final, but was still defeated in the end and Federer won his first Grand Slam title. With that he had achieved his season goal and the mocking voices fell silent.

After winning at Wimbledon, Federer also intervened in the battle for first place in the world rankings. Over the next few weeks, he missed several opportunities to achieve this position. He lost to Roddick in Canada in the semi-finals after a 4-2 lead in the decisive set. In Cincinnati and at the US Open, however, he was defeated by David Nalbandian. Also in the Davis Cup semi-final against Australia, Federer had to give up the game after a 2-0 lead in the preliminary game against Lleyton Hewitt when the score was 5: 3 in the third set. Switzerland thus missed the second Davis Cup final after 1992. Despite the sixth win of the season during the indoor season in Vienna, the top of the world rankings was no longer achievable for Federer this season. But at the Masters Cup in Houston he ended his season with a success. As in the previous year, he won his three group games and beat Roddick, who was already number one in the world, in the semi-finals. In the final, he defeated Andre Agassi in three sets and won his first world title. Federer finished the 2003 season in second place in the world rankings. In December 2003, the separation from coach Lundgren, which Federer justified with signs of wear and tear and the feeling of needing something new, caused astonishment.

In first place in the world rankings (2004-2008)

In public, Federer was criticized for breaking up with his successful coach. But despite doubts about his form and no hasty search for a new coach, he played his way to the round of 16 at the Australian Open 2004 without losing a set. In four sets each, he beat two players, Hewitt and Nalbandian, who both still had positive game records against him. After beating the world number two Juan Carlos Ferrero , he reached the tournament finals. He beat opponent Marat Safin in the final in three sets and thus achieved the second Grand Slam title of his career. At the same time he also conquered the top of the world rankings, which he held until August 17, 2008. Up to the French Open in May he won three more titles, including the Masters Series tournaments in Indian Wells and Hamburg. In Paris, however, he lost in the third round to the three-time title holder Gustavo Kuerten . Federer then won another double on the pitch at Halle and Wimbledon. In the final of Wimbledon Andy Roddick took a set from him, unlike in the semi-finals last year, but Federer ultimately defended his title. In Gstaad and Toronto, he built his winning streak to 23 games until he lost his opening match in Cincinnati.

A bigger disappointment for Federer was the second round defeat at the Olympic Games in Athens against the Czech Tomáš Berdych . The Swiss competed in Athens not only as a clear candidate for a medal, but also as the flag bearer of his country at the opening ceremony. On the other hand, this defeat also formed the starting point for another winning streak. At the US Open in New York he was only forced in the quarterfinals by Andre Agassi over the full distance of five sets. In the final, he left Lleyton Hewitt only six games in three sets on the way to his third Grand Slam title of the season. He was the first player since Sweden's Mats Wilander in 1988, who had achieved this success. Federer had to cancel the subsequent indoor season almost completely due to a torn muscle fiber. In time for the Masters Cup, however, he was fit again. There he reached the final undefeated and met Hewitt again. He defeated the former world number one for the sixth time this season and thus further expanded his position at the top of the world. In the 2004 season he did not lose any of his eleven finals and won all 18 games against opponents from the top 10.

Roger Federer at the US Open 2005

For the new 2005 season, Federer signed the Australian Tony Roche as a new coach. Roche, who had already led players to several Grand Slam successes as coach of Ivan Lendl and Patrick Rafter , should be at Federer's side, especially in the important tournaments. So the special focus for this season was on the French Open, which Federer has not yet won in his career. The winning streak that Federer brought with him from the old season broke in the semi-finals at the Australian Open against Marat Safin after more than four hours of play. This was followed by four tournament victories in a row, including the Swiss won the double from the Masters tournaments in Indian Wells and Miami for the first time. He turned a 2-0 set deficit against Rafael Nadal in the final in Miami . This took second place in the world rankings through regular successes on clay courts and increasingly shortened the gap to Federer. After his sixth title of the season in Hamburg, there was another encounter with Nadal in Paris in the semifinals. This time the Swiss lost after four sets. Although Federer had achieved his best result so far at the French Open, he remained without a Grand Slam title during the season.

Meanwhile, the defeat in France was the start of the longest winning streak of his career at the time. At Wimbledon he only lost one set on the way to the title hat trick, at the US Open he defeated Andre Agassi in four sets in his last Grand Slam final. To the Masters Cup at the end of the year, he brought a winning streak of 31 games in a row, which he expanded to 35 by reaching the tournament final. Here he met David Nalbandian, against whom he had won the last four games after the first five duels had all gone to the Argentine. After two tie-breaks, the world number one led 2-0 in sets. But the longer the match lasted, the more Federer deteriorated physically. Although he was able to turn a 4-0 deficit into a 6-5 lead in the last set, Federer ended the game as a loser. This not only broke off the fifth longest winning streak in professional tennis, but also his record of 24 final wins in a row. In addition, with 81 wins and 4 defeats, the Swiss missed the chance to equalize the statistically best professional season of John McEnroe from 1984 (82 wins and 3 defeats). Nevertheless, Federer ended the season after the missed chance of his third Masters Cup title in a row in first place in the world rankings.

He started the 2006 season with two tournament wins, including his seventh Grand Slam title at the Australian Open. In Dubai, however, he lost again to Nadal in the final, which ended the record series of 56 wins in a row on hard courts that began in Rotterdam last year. This was the starting signal for the numerous duels that they should deliver over the next few weeks and months. Before the start of the clay court season, Federer again won the Indian Wells and Miami tournaments. On clay he reached the finals at the Masters tournaments in Monte Carlo and Rome. In both games he lost to Nadal, although he came to match points in Rome. In Paris there was also the final between Federer and Nadal. After winning the first set, Federer missed more chances and lost for the fifth time in a row against Nadal. Nevertheless, he had established himself as the second best clay court player in the world over the course of the season.

At Wimbledon he played his way to the fourth title in a row without losing a set in the final. There he met again on the world number two Nadal. The Spaniard was able to take a set from Federer, but in the end the Swiss celebrated his eighth Grand Slam title. Another winning streak began for him at the US Open. For the third time he defeated Andy Roddick in a Grand Slam final and for the second time after 2004 he won three Grand Slam titles in one season. For the first time in three years, Federer then took part in the indoor season without injury. With his tournament victory in Madrid he broke the record of Jimmy Connors , who had topped the world rankings for 160 consecutive weeks in the 1970s.

After the tournament in Madrid, Federer decided after several unsuccessful attempts with a final victory over the Chilean Fernando González for the first time his home tournament in Basel , where he worked as a ball boy in his youth. He then traveled to the Masters Cup in Shanghai. There he reached the final again without defeat in the group stage, in which he only played seven games in three sets against the American James Blake on the way to his third title at the year-end tournament. Federer ended his third season in a row at the top of the world rankings, which had previously only been achieved by Jimmy Connors, John McEnroe , Ivan Lendl and Pete Sampras . The 2006 season was the best season in Federer's career and one of the most successful in history. He won twelve tournaments and reached the final 16 times of 17 tournaments played, which is unsurpassed to this day.

Federer 2007 in Cincinnati

In the 2006 season, Federer only lacked victory at the French Open to achieve the greatest success in tennis, the Grand Slam . So far, apart from the American Don Budge (1938), only the Australian Rod Laver (1962 and 1969) has succeeded. Laver himself stated in January 2006 that he thought Federer could win the Grand Slam. Federer took the first step in this direction at the Australian Open, where he became the first player since Björn Borg to win a Grand Slam tournament without losing a set. In the course of the following clay court season, the Swiss parted with his trainer Tony Roche, defeated his rival Nadal on clay for the first time in Hamburg and ended his series of 81 wins on this surface. But the hunt for the Grand Slam win ended again at the French Open, where Federer made it back to the final, but could not repeat Hamburg's success against Nadal.

At the beginning of the season, Federer defended his title at the Australian Open and won the tournament for the third time. In Indian Wells he lost to Guillermo Cañas at the start , which ended his streak of seven tournament wins and 41 wins in a row. As in the previous year, there was also a duel between Federer and Nadal in the Wimbledon final. In his fifth final there, the Swiss was forced for the first time over the full distance of five sets; but after the match he received his fifth trophy in a row. With this he set the Open Era record of the Swede Björn Borg . In Cincinnati he won the 50th title of his career against James Blake. Federer also won at the US Open again, in three sets he got the upper hand against Novak Đoković . Since 2004, he has won both Wimbledon and the US Open for the fourth year in a row. Thus Federer only had to accept a Grand Slam defeat in the final of the French Open. At other tournaments, however, Federer showed himself to be beatable. He triumphed for the first time since 2003 in fewer than three Masters Series tournaments. Only in Hamburg and Cincinnati was he finally the tournament winner; in Monte Carlo, Montreal and Madrid he was defeated in the final, while he did not reach the quarterfinals in the other four Masters tournaments. Nevertheless, Federer defended the top of the rankings throughout the season and, after his fourth triumph at the Tennis Masters Cup, ended the season in this position for the fourth time in a row. Until then, this had only been achieved by the Americans Pete Sampras (6 ×), Jimmy Connors (5 ×) and John McEnroe (4 ×).

The next chance to win the Grand Slam ended at the beginning of the 2008 season. Federer was eliminated in the semifinals of the Australian Open against Novak Đoković. This also tore his series of ten consecutive finals in Grand Slam tournaments. After the defeat in Melbourne, Federer could not win a title until the end of March. For the first time since 2000 he completed the first three months of a season without a tournament success. On March 7, 2008, Federer announced that he had been suffering from Pfeiffer glandular fever since December of the previous year . At the beginning of April he won his first title in Estoril in 2008. During the clay court season he reached the finals of the Masters Series tournaments in Monte Carlo and Hamburg, where he was defeated by Rafael Nadal. Federer also made the third consecutive finals at the French Open, but suffered the third defeat in a row against Nadal. He only got four game wins in the three set defeat. Following the defeat in the final in Paris, he secured his second tournament victory of the year with his fifth success in Halle. In Wimbledon there was a total of sixth final encounter between Federer and Nadal in a tournament of this category. After almost five hours of play in the longest Wimbledon final in history, the series of 65 victories on grass as well as five titles and 40 victories in a row at Wimbledon ended. With 7: 9 in the fifth set, Federer had to admit defeat, who for the first time in six years had been unsuccessful in the first three Grand Slam tournaments of the year.

Loss and regaining of world rankings (2008-2010)

Federer 2008 in Ohio

At the Masters tournament in Cincinnati he was eliminated in the second round, which means that after 237 weeks at the top of the world rankings he was replaced by Nadal. At the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing , where he was the flag bearer at the opening ceremony like four years earlier, he competed in singles and doubles alongside Stan Wawrinka . While he was eliminated in the quarter-finals against James Blake , he and Wawrinka won the double-final against the Swedes Simon Aspelin and Thomas Johansson and thus the gold medal.

At the US Open , Federer managed to win the title in a Grand Slam tournament again after three consecutive participations without a win. In the final, he beat Andy Murray in three sets. With his fifth win in a row at the US Open, he set the Open Era record of Pete Sampras and Jimmy Connors, becoming the first player to win the two Grand Slam tournaments five times in a row. During the indoor season he won his fourth season title at the tournament in Basel. At the Masters Series tournament in Madrid, however, he lost to Andy Murray in the semi-finals. This also inflicted his second defeat at the Tennis Masters Cup on Federer, so that the Swiss failed there for the first time in the group stage in his seventh participation. Nevertheless, one victory was enough for him to secure second place in the world rankings at the end of the season.

At the Australian Open in 2009, Federer reached the final and thus the opportunity to set Pete Sampras' Grand Slam record in the game against Rafael Nadal. But as in the Wimbledon final, Federer lost to the Spaniard in five sets and more than four hours of play. During the match he only used six of his 19 break opportunities.

He also remained untitled in the first two Masters tournaments of the 2009 season. While he was defeated in Indian Wells in the semifinals Murray in three sets, he also failed in Miami in the semifinals to Đoković. At the beginning of the clay court season in Monte Carlo, Federer experienced another setback when he lost to his doubles partner and friend Stan Wawrinka in two sets in the round of 16. After another semi-final against Đoković in Rome, he achieved his first tournament victory in seven months in Madrid. In the final, he defeated world number one Nadal in two sets, for the first time after five games without a win in 2008 and 2009, and won his first Masters title since August 2007.

At the French Open 2009 Federer reached the final for the fourth time in a row, where he had to go the full distance of five sets on the way to the final both in the round of 16 against Tommy Haas and in the semifinals against Juan Martín del Potro . In the final he met the Swede Robin Söderling , who had previously inflicted the four-time title holder Nadal's first defeat in Roland Garros. Federer won the final 6: 1, 7: 6 and 6: 4, setting Pete Sampras' record with a total of 14 Grand Slam titles. In addition, Federer's success became the sixth player in history (after Fred Perry , Don Budge , Rod Laver, Roy Emerson and Andre Agassi), who could win all four tournaments in the highest category at least once.

Federer at Wimbledon in 2009

At Wimbledon in 2009, Federer moved into the final with only one set loss during the tournament. The seventh participation in the finals in a row also meant a new tournament record. He met Andy Roddick for the third time after 2004 and 2005. As in the finals of 2007 and 2008, Federer was forced over the full distance, but ended up with 5: 7, 7: 6, 7: 6, 3: 6 and 16:14, the longest fifth set in a grand Slam final, off the pitch as the winner. With his 15th Grand Slam title, he set a new record. Since defending champion Nadal had canceled his participation due to an injury, Federer regained first place in the world rankings with his sixth Wimbledon success after 46 weeks.

In the subsequent North American hard court season, Federer's series ended after 21 victories in the quarter-finals in Montreal against Jo-Wilfried Tsonga . A week later he defeated Đoković in the final of Cincinnati and celebrated his fourth win of the season, where he was able to defeat Andy Murray for the first time in four games in the semifinals. Federer started again as a top favorite and, after an interruption of two Grand Slam tournaments, again as the top seeded player in the US Open . In Flushing Meadows he reached his sixth US Open final in a row. After 2006 and 2007, he was in all four Grand Slam finals for the third time within a season, which was a new record. As in Melbourne and Wimbledon, the match was only decided in the fifth set. After more than four hours of play, Federer was defeated by the Argentine Juan Martín del Potro in the decisive set with 2: 6, thus tearing the series of 40 wins in a row at this tournament. At the World Tour Finals at the end of the season, he lost in the semi-finals against eventual tournament winner Nikolai Dawydenko. Nevertheless, the result was enough to end a season in first place in the world rankings for the fifth time, which means that only Pete Sampras is ahead of him in these statistics, who has achieved this six times in his career.

The year 2010 began for Federer with a semi-final against the eventual winner Dawydenko in Doha . At the subsequent Australian Open he reached u. a. a successful revenge against Dawydenko his 23rd Grand Slam semi-final in a row and the eighth Grand Slam final in a row. In the Melbourne final, he beat Andy Murray in three sets. With his 16th Grand Slam title, Federer Andre Agassis set an Open Era record with four Australian Open wins and also won at least one Grand Slam tournament for the eighth season in a row. Only Pete Sampras and Björn Borg had previously achieved this.

Federer then suffered from pneumonia and was eliminated early in the Masters tournaments in the USA and at the beginning of the clay court season. It was not until the tournament in Madrid that he was able to return to the final. In the reissue of last year's final, however, he was defeated by Nadal in two sets.

Another loss of top position (2010-2011)

At the French Open there was a duel with Söderling in the quarter-finals, whom Federer had defeated in the previous year's final. The Swede succeeded in taking revenge, and Federer's streak for uninterrupted semifinals in Grand Slam tournaments ended. Because of Nadal's tournament victory in Roland Garros, he also lost the world rankings again to the Spaniard. With a total of 285 weeks at the top of the rankings, he was only one week short of equalizing Pete Sampras' record. This ended his series of eight Grand Slam finals in a row. Between Wimbledon 2005 and the Australian Open 2010 he was in the final 18 times in nineteen tournaments, only in Melbourne he was defeated in 2008 in the semi-finals by oković.

At the Wimbledon tournament, he failed as defending champion in the quarterfinals in four sets to Tomáš Berdych . Due to the defeat, Federer lost another place in the world rankings and found himself in third place for the first time in over six years. At his next tournament after Wimbledon, however, he regained position 2 by reaching the finals. While he lost the final against Murray, he won a week later by a three-set win over the American Mardy Fish in Cincinnati his 17th title in a Masters tournament.

At the US Open 2010 Federer reached a Grand Slam semi-final after two quarterfinal defeats, which he lost to Novak Đoković. As a result, he had to let the Serbs overtake him in the world rankings. Federer then reached three finals in a row, celebrating tournament victories in Stockholm and at his home tournament in Basel, while he had to admit defeat to Andy Murray in Shanghai. He once again reached second place in the world rankings and drew level with Sampras in this category with victory in Stockholm, his 64th tournament victory in total.

At the end of the season, Federer was able to win the ATP World Tour Finals for the fifth time . He prevailed over the course of the tournament against Đoković, Murray and Nadal, who occupied places 4, 3 and 1 in the world rankings. With his fifth triumph at the season-end tournament, he drew level with the record winners Lendl and Sampras.

After a successful start in 2011 with a victory in Doha , Federer failed at the Australian Open as he did at the US Open 2010 in the semifinals to Đoković. For the first time since Wimbledon 2003 , Federer no longer held a Grand Slam title.

He then reached the final in Dubai, where he again lost to Đoković, as well as a short time later in the semi-finals of Indian Wells, whereby the Serb overtook Federer in the world rankings. After another semi-final defeat in Miami against Nadal, the clay court season began for Federer. In his appearances in Monte Carlo, Madrid and Rome, he only reached a semi-final in the Spanish capital, which he lost to Nadal in three sets. At the French Open , he defeated Đoković in the semifinals after three defeats, ending the Serbs' winning streak of 43 matches. He lost the final against Nadal in four sets. As in the previous year, Federer failed in the quarter-finals at Wimbledon. In the five-set defeat against Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga , he lost a 2-0 set lead for the first time in his Grand Slam career. At the US Open he reached the quarter-finals of a Grand Slam tournament for the 30th time in a row with a three-set win in the round of 16 against the Argentine Juan Monaco. Against Tsonga, Federer made his semi-finals perfect in three sets. There he was defeated despite two match points and a 2-0 set lead to the eventual tournament winner and world number one Đoković. For the first time since 2002, Federer could not win a Grand Slam tournament in one season.

Federer canceled the start at the following Masters tournament in Shanghai due to minor injuries. As a result, he fell behind Murray in the world rankings to fourth. Federer celebrated the second tournament success of the year at the Swiss Indoors in Basel; he defeated in the final the Japanese Kei Nishikori , who had previously defeated the world number one Đoković. A week later, Federer won the Masters tournament in Paris-Bercy for the first time in his career by beating Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the final .

At the ATP World Tour Finals 2011 , Federer moved into his 100th individual career finals without losing a match in the group stage, in which he defeated Nadal, among others. By reaching the final, he was also able to return to position 3 in the world rankings at the end of the season. In the final, like two weeks earlier in Paris, he met Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, whom he defeated in three sets. With his sixth success at the season-end tournament, which was also his 70th individual title overall, Federer overtook Pete Sampras and Ivan Lendl and is now the sole record winner of the tournament.

Seventh win at Wimbledon and temporary world rankings (2012)

At the Australian Open , the Swiss reached the semi-finals, but had to admit defeat to Nadal in four sets. He played his next tournament in February in Rotterdam, where he reached his first final of the year, which he clearly won in straight sets against Juan Martín del Potro. At the first Masters tournament of the season in Indian Wells, Federer reached his third final in a row with a semi-final victory over Nadal. The clay court season began Federer at the Masters tournament in Madrid . In this competition, which was held for the first time on blue sand, he celebrated his 20th Masters tournament victory with a three-set win over Tomáš Berdych, which again equalized the record for most Masters titles, which Nadal had meanwhile improved by winning in Monte Carlo. With his third victory in Madrid, Federer overtook Nadal in the world rankings and took second position for the first time since March 2011. A week later he was eliminated in Rome in the semifinals against Novak Đoković in straight sets and fell back in the world rankings behind Nadal, who won the tournament.

The grass season began Federer in Halle , where he reached the final, which he lost to the German Tommy Haas in two sets. Federer then started at the Wimbledon tournament . Here he caught up a 2-0 set deficit against French Julien Benneteau in the third round and finally moved into his 32nd Grand Slam semifinals, making Federer the sole record holder. In the semifinals, he met Đoković, as before in Paris, whom he defeated in four sets this time. With that, Federer reached his eighth final at Wimbledon, which was another record. In the final he wrestled Andy Murray, who had been the first Briton to reach the Wimbledon final since 1938, after a set deficit with 4: 6, 7: 5, 6: 3 and 6: 4. With his win, Federer equalized the record of Pete Sampras and William Renshaw with seven wins at Wimbledon; it was his 17th Grand Slam title. In addition, he took the lead in the world rankings for the first time since May 2010, setting the record of 286 weeks held by Sampras at the top of the world rankings and one week later became the sole record holder.

2012 Olympic Summer Games award ceremony

At the Olympic Games in London , Federer won his first individual medal at the Olympic Games with the silver medal. After Athens and Beijing, he was intended to be the Swiss flag bearer for the third time , but waived this honor in favor of Stan Wawrinka. In the Olympic tennis tournament, which was played on the Wimbledon facility, he met Juan Martín del Potro in the semifinals, whom he defeated after almost four and a half hours in the longest three-set match of the Open Era with 19:17 in the third set. In the final there was a new edition of the Wimbledon final against Andy Murray, which the Briton won 3-0 after sets.

The American hard court season began Federer after he canceled his appearance at the Toronto tournament, at the Masters tournament in Cincinnati . There he won the final in straight sets against Đoković and set with his 21st tournament victory in this category for the third time, the record of Nadal for most tournament successes at Masters tournaments. Federer never gave up his serve during the entire tournament, which he last succeeded in 2008 in Halle.

At the subsequent US Open, Federer was defeated by Tomáš Berdych in four sets in the quarterfinals, making it the first time since 2003 not to reach the semifinals in Flushing Meadows. After a Davis Cup appearance for Switzerland against the Netherlands, Federer did not play his next tournament again until October in Shanghai . There he reached the round of the last four, in which he had to admit defeat Murray in straight sets. At the following home tournament in Basel , he moved into his ninth final at this tournament, but was defeated by del Potro in three sets. For the Paris-Bercy tournament taking place one week later , Federer canceled as defending champion. It was therefore clear that he would be replaced by Đoković after a total of 302 weeks at the top of the world rankings and would end 2012 in second place in the ranking.

At the season's final tournament in London , Federer reached the semifinals despite another defeat by del Potro in the group stage. Here he kept the upper hand against Murray in two sets and thus moved into the eighth final overall and the third in a row in tournaments of this category. In the final he met the new world number one Đoković, to whom he was defeated 6: 7 and 5: 7.

Temporary fall from the top 5 in the world rankings (2013-2016)

At Wimbledon , Federer dropped out surprisingly early. In the second round he lost to Serhij Stachowskyj with 7: 6, 6: 7, 5: 7 and 6: 7. This ended his series of 36 quarter-finals in Grand Slam tournaments in a row. He fell back to 5th place in the world rankings and was therefore not in the top 4 for the first time in ten years. After that, he competed at Hamburg's Rothenbaum . There he was defeated in the semi-finals to the number 114 in the world, Federico Delbonis , with 6: 7 and 6: 7. In Gstaad he lost his first game against Daniel Brands . Due to back problems, Federer was unable to compete in top form at both tournaments. He then canceled his participation in the Canada Masters ; in Cincinnati , however, he went to defend his title. In the quarterfinals he lost to Nadal 7: 5, 4: 6 and 3: 6, which slipped him to 7th place in the world rankings behind Juan Martín del Potro and Tomáš Berdych, the worst position since October 2002.

At the US Open , Federer lost to Tommy Robredo in the round of 16. He was last eliminated that early in 2003 at the fourth major tournament of the season. In the last few weeks of the season his results improved somewhat. So he reached the final at his home tournament in Basel , but, as in the previous year, had to admit defeat by del Potro in three sets. In his last two tournament appearances in Paris and at the Tour Finals in London, Federer reached the semi-finals and ended the season in 6th place in the world rankings. The next time Federer and Đoković met in the final of Indian Wells, Federer lost in three sets. At the subsequent Masters in Miami he lost to Kei Nishikori in the quarterfinals . In Monte Carlo he reached after a semi-final victory over Đoković the final, which he lost to his compatriot Stan Wawrinka . At the French Open he failed in the round of 16 against Ernests Gulbis . At the preparatory tournament for Wimbledon in Halle , he repeated his triumph from the previous year with a victory over Alejandro Falla . At Wimbledon he reached the final and was defeated by Đoković in a five-set match lasting almost four hours. At the Masters in Toronto he reached the final, which he lost to Tsonga 5-7 and 6-7. In Cincinnati he won his 80th individual title with his final victory over David Ferrer.

At the US Open he reached the semi-finals, which he surprisingly lost in three sets against Marin Čilić . Before that he turned against Gaël Monfils for the ninth time in his career a 0-2 set deficit; he won the quarter-finals 4: 6, 3: 6, 6: 4, 7: 5 and 6: 2. At the Shanghai Masters , Federer reached the ninth final in 2014 and defeated Gilles Simon in two sets in the tie-break after he had already defeated ovoković in the semifinals. It was his first title win there and made him move up to second place in the world rankings. Federer then also won the Swiss Indoors with a sovereign final victory over David Goffin .

At the end of 2014 he took part in the World Tour Finals in London. After victories over Milos Raonic , Kei Nishikori, Andy Murray and Stan Wawrinka, he made it to the final, but had to cancel it due to back pain.

The year 2015 began for Federer with a tournament victory in Brisbane . The final victory against Milos Raonic was also his 1000th victory on the ATP World Tour. Before him, only Ivan Lendl (1071) and Jimmy Connors (1253) had achieved this . At the Australian Open , Federer was eliminated in round three against Andreas Seppi . In February he celebrated his second tournament success of the season in Dubai and his seventh win at this tournament when he defeated Novak Đoković in the final.

In Indian Wells he made it into the final, which he lost in three sets against Đoković. Then he won the tournament in Istanbul with a final victory against Pablo Cuevas . It was his 85th career title and his first tournament win on clay since the triumph in Madrid in 2012. In this tournament he failed, seeded in first place, in his opening game against Nick Kyrgios . In Rome he reached the final against Đoković as in Indian Wells and was again without a win. The French Open ended for Federer in the quarter-finals. Against his compatriot and eventual winner Stan Wawrinka he lost the game in three sets.

Federer opened the lawn season with the start at the Gerry Weber Open in Halle. With a final victory over Andreas Seppi, he was only the third player in the Open Era (after Guillermo Vilas and Rafael Nadal) to win a tournament eight times. Federer also reached the final at Wimbledon , his tenth participation in the final at this tournament. In four sets he lost, again this season, Novak Đoković. In the final in Cincinnati, he retaliated for this defeat, before the Serbian won again at the US Open in the final. Federer could not defend his title at the Shanghai Masters , as he surprisingly lost to the Spaniard Albert Ramos in his first game . However, he won the title at the Swiss Indoors Basel again, this time against his long-time rival Nadal. It was his first win over Nadal in more than three years. At the last Masters tournament in Paris in 2015 , Federer was eliminated in the round of 16 against John Isner . At the ATP World Tour Finals 2015 he reached the final, in which he again lost to Đoković, whom he had defeated in the group stage.

Federer struggled with injuries in 2016. He only played seven tournaments and remained without a title for the first time since 2000. At the beginning of the season he was defeated by Milos Raonic in the final in Brisbane , at the Australian Open he was once again beaten by Đoković. Injuries forced him to pause until the Monte Carlo Masters . There he played his way to the quarterfinals before he was beaten by Jo-Wilfried Tsonga. At his next two tournament appearances in Rome and Stuttgart , Federer was defeated by the young Austrian Dominic Thiem . At the French Open , he could not appear, which is the first time since the US Open 1999 that he missed a Grand Slam tournament. In Halle he lost to Alexander Zverev in the semifinals. At Wimbledon , Federer failed in the semifinals to Milos Raonic after he had made up a two-set deficit against Marin Čilić in the previous round. He then canceled all further tournaments for 2016 due to persistent knee problems. This meant that he fell back to position 16 in the world rankings by the end of the year.

Comeback - first Grand Slam title in five years and eighth Wimbledon triumph (2017)

In Australia, Federer only used the Hopman Cup as preparation for the first Grand Slam tournament of the year, where he won two out of three matches with Belinda Bencic . At the Australian Open , he won his 18th Grand Slam title. Only placed in 17th position, he first reached the quarter-finals, in which he defeated Mischa Zverev in three sets. In the semifinals he defeated his compatriot Wawrinka in five sets, who had fought his way through to equalize the set after losing the first two sets. In the final there was another encounter with long-term rival Nadal, whom he had last faced in Melbourne in the 2009 final. For the defeat at the time in five sets, Federer was able to return the favor, again in five sets (6: 4, 3: 6, 6: 1, 3: 6, 6: 3). After an early loss in the round of 16 of the Dubai Championships against qualifier Yevgeny Donskoy , Federer won the Paribas Open in Indian Wells in his fourth tournament of the year , where he defeated Wawrinka in two sets in the final. With that, Federer was again at position 6 in the world rankings. After a tight semi-final against Nick Kyrgios in three sets, each decided in the tiebreaker, Federer won this title and the so-called Sunshine Double consisting of Indian Wells and Miami for the third time with a straight two-set win over Nadal in the Miami final. As a result, Federer improved to fourth place in the world rankings. Federer renounced the clay court season and did not return to the tournament until the grass season. At the MercedesCup in Stuttgart he was eliminated in the round of 16 against Tommy Haas, but then won his ninth title at the tournament in Halle in the final against Alexander Zverev, against whom he was eliminated in the semifinals last year. At Wimbledon , Federer won his 19th Grand Slam title and reached the final for the third time after 2006 and 2008 without losing a set and for the eleventh time overall. a. could win five tie-breaks without having to fend off a breakball. In the final, he clearly defeated Marin Čilić in three sets (6: 3, 6: 1, 6: 4) and won the grass tournament for the first time without losing a set. He overtook the Briton William Renshaw and the American Pete Sampras , who had each won the Wimbledon singles final seven times. At 35 years and 342 days, Federer was the oldest Wimbledon finalist since Ken Rosewall in 1974 . With his final success he is the oldest winner of the tournament in the Open Era.

He then took a short break from tournaments until the Montreal Masters . There he missed his sixth title in the sixth final of the year against Alexander Zverev in straight sets. The following week in Cincinnati he would have had the chance to return to the top of the world rankings with a tournament victory, but had to cancel his participation due to back pain. At the US Open he was eliminated in the quarterfinals against Juan Martín del Potro. Two weeks later, as a member of the European team, he won the Laver Cup, which was held for the first time in 2017, and played a double for the first time at Rafael Nadal's side, which the two played against Sam Querrey and Jack Sock 6: 4, 1: 6, [10 : 5] won; his individual victories against Querrey (6: 4, 6: 2) and Nick Kyrgios (4: 6, 7: 6, [11: 9]) were also decisive contributions to the 15: 9 success of the European selection. He then won the Shanghai and Basel tournaments one after the other . At the end of the season, Federer reached the semifinals of the ATP Finals , where he was somewhat surprisingly defeated by David Goffin. With a total of seven tournament wins out of eleven tournaments, 2017 was the most successful for Federer in the last ten years - he only won more titles in the seasons from 2004 to 2007. But it wasn't enough for first place in the world rankings, as Rafael Nadal also had two grand this year -Slam tournaments and in the other two more points than Federer, who had left Paris, was able to collect. Several times Federer had the chance of number one, but stuck to his strategy to take longer breaks after tournaments and to play fewer tournaments overall.

20th Grand Slam title and again first in the world rankings (2018)

At the beginning of 2018, Federer was able to successfully defend his title at the Australian Open , winning his 20th Grand Slam title, and with his sixth victory in Melbourne, he set the record for Roy Emerson and Novak Đoković. Contrary to his original planning for the season, he decided to register for the Rotterdam tournament in mid-February , as he had the opportunity to push the meanwhile injured Rafael Nadal from the top of the world rankings. This project succeeded with the victory in the quarter-finals against Robin Haase . In the final of the tournament he beat world number three Grigor Dimitrov in straight sets 6: 2, 6: 2. On February 19, 2018, after a hiatus of more than five years, Federer became the oldest number 1 in history. After losing to Juan Martin del Potro in the final at the Indian Wells tournament (4: 6, 7: 6, 6: 7) and the subsequent second-round defeat against Thanasi Kokkinakis at the Miami tournament (6: 3, 3: 6, 6: 7) his points as last year's winner had been unable to defend and had therefore lost in the meantime the world rankings lead to Rafael Nadal, he created through the finals and then against Milos Raonic (6: 4, 7: 6) won the first final victory in the tournament in Stuttgart the conditions for his return to first place. Before that, Federer had skipped the clay court season for the third time in a row. In Halle he reached the final for the twelfth time, but lost it against Borna Ćorić in three sets with 6: 7, 6: 3, 2: 6. At Wimbledon , Federer started as defending champion, but surprisingly lost in the quarterfinals to Kevin Anderson after four hours of play in five sets with 6: 2, 7: 6, 5: 7, 4: 6, 11:13. Federer finished the season in third place in the world rankings.

At the beginning of the 2019 season he won the Hopman Cup in Perth for the third time with Belinda Bencic . At the Australian Open Federer could not defend the title, he failed in the round of 16 against Stefanos Tsitsipas in four tight sets, which also tore his series of 17 victories in a row in Melbourne. With his eighth title in Dubai , after Jimmy Connors, he was the second player in the Open Era to achieve a hundred individual tournament wins. In the final he defeated Stefanos Tsitsipas in straight sets. At the Indian Wells Masters he reached the final for the ninth time, but lost it in three sets against Dominic Thiem, who won his first Masters title. He won the tournament in Halle for the tenth time after a two-set win against David Goffin, making him the second player in the Open Era after Nadal to achieve ten wins at a tournament.

At Wimbledon , Federer reached the final for the twelfth time, but lost it for the third time against Novak Đoković in five sets with 6: 7, 6: 1, 6: 7, 6: 4, 12:13. With a playing time of 4 hours and 57 minutes, it was the longest Wimbledon final in history, and for the first time the tie-break in the decisive set was played in a single. Previously, he achieved his 100th win at Wimbledon with the success in the quarter-finals against Kei Nishikori, which no other player had achieved before. At the US Open he failed in the quarterfinals in five sets to Grigor Dimitrov. In Basel he won his tenth title at this tournament without losing a set and won there for the third time in a row. In the summer, however, he had to have another operation on the same knee, which meant the end of the season. He is now planning his return to the tour for the 2021 season.

Davis Cup

Roger Federer in Monte Carlo 2007

Roger Federer has a record of 52 wins and 20 defeats in 26 Davis Cup games (40: 8 in singles and 12:10 in doubles). He has been a regular member of the Swiss team since 1999 and led his country to win the title in 2014 and to the semi-finals of the competition in 2003 . In 1999, 2001 and 2004 , Federer reached the quarter-finals of the competition with the Swiss team.

Since the 2005 season, Federer has concentrated significantly on his individual career and did not take part in the first round games in his country from 2005 to 2007, whereupon Switzerland failed in the first round. Subsequently, however, Federer took part in the qualifying round to prevent his country's relegation from the world group. While this was successful in 2005 and 2006 , Switzerland lost 3-2 against the Czech Republic in relegation in 2007 , despite Federer's two successes in singles, and was thus no longer represented in the world group for the first time in 16 years.

In September 2008 , the Swiss team with Federer and Wawrinka managed to immediately return to the world group with a win against Belgium . After Federer had once again missed the first round game in Switzerland in 2009 , in which the team was defeated by the USA , he was part of the team again in September in the relegation against Italy . With two individual wins, Federer helped to prevent relegation from the world group.

In 2010 Federer did not play a Davis Cup game, whereupon the Swiss team relegated to the European group again after 2007. In 2011 Federer took part in the match between Switzerland and Portugal in the European group and, with two victories in the individual, helped the Confederates to qualify for the promotion round to the world group. Here Switzerland won 3-2 against Australia , to which Federer again contributed two individual victories, and thus rose to the world group.

Roger Federer in the doubles of the final of the Davis Cup 2014 at the Stade Pierre-Mauroy in Villeneuve-d'Ascq

In February 2012 Federer took part in a first-round game in Switzerland for the first time since 2004 when he met the USA. He lost to his rivals both in his opening singles and in doubles at Wawrinka's side, which meant that Switzerland was already the loser of the match after the double. With two individual victories, however, Federer helped the team to remain in the world group in September 2012 in the relegation game against the Netherlands .

In 2014 , after a one-year break, Federer was part of the Swiss team again and helped her to reach the next round in the first round against Serbia with one and in the quarter-finals against Kazakhstan with two individual wins. In the semi-final against Italy, he contributed two individual successes to the team's victory, which means that Switzerland reached the final of the competition for the second time in its Davis Cup history after 1992 . In the final against France, Federer first lost his opening single against Gaël Monfils in three sets, but then won both the doubles on the side of Wawrinka, who had won his opening match in the singles before, and his second singles against Richard Gasquet , with which the Swiss team prematurely as Davis Cup winner was determined.

With 52 victories, Federer is in first place in his country's all-time ranking. His win rate is by far the most successful of the players with more than 20 bets.

Exhibition fights

Immediately after the Tennis Masters Cup, Federer took on Rafael Nadal in an exhibition match in Seoul on November 21, 2006 . Federer prevailed against the Mallorcan with 6: 3, 3: 6 and 6: 3.

In May 2007, Federer met Rafael Nadal again in the “ Battle of Surfaces ” in Palma . In front of 7,000 spectators, the two dueled on a pitch with different surfaces. On one side of the net, the Swiss’s favorite court, turf, on the other, Nadal’s favorite sand. In the sold out Palma Arena, Nadal won 7: 5, 4: 6 and 7: 6 (12:10). Federer denied a highly regarded exhibition series in November 2007 when he competed against Pete Sampras in three exhibitions. Trainer

  • 1989–1994: Adolf Kacovský (Switzerland, now the Czech Republic) had a decisive influence on Federer's play in his childhood. As coach of the tennis club TC Old Boys Basel, Kacovský worked with him until Federer's move to Ecublens in 1995.
  • 1991–1995, 1997–2000: Peter Carter (Australia) also looked after Federer during his time with the Old Boys Basel. After Federer's move to the international tour, Carter became his association coach. Even after separating from the association, Carter remained a close advisor to Federer.
  • 1995–1997: Federer spent the years 1995–1997 in the national Swiss training center in Ecublens, where he was supported by the association for the start of the international junior tour.
  • 2000–2003: Peter Lundgren (Sweden) was already in charge of Federer as an association trainer before 2000 and after separating from the association he became the private coach of the Swiss. After the 2003 season, the separation followed.
  • 2004: Federer played in 2004 without a coach.
  • 2005–2007: Tony Roche (Australia) looked after Federer as part-time coach at important tournaments from 2005 to 2007. In May 2007 the separation took place. Federer spent the rest of the year without a trainer.

Play style

Federer in Ohio 2008

Roger Federer is considered the most versatile player in tennis today and also one of the best all-rounders in the history of professional tennis. In 2007, the American tennis magazine named the Swiss one of the best players of today's tennis generation in a list of the best players in certain areas of the tennis game in a total of seven out of eleven categories. He was also counted among the best players in tennis history in four areas. This versatile and varied game not only enabled Federer to be successful on the different court surfaces, but also made him the dominant player of his generation. So his all-round game prevailed against the more one-sided types of players of his generation such as Andy Roddick (serve) or Lleyton Hewitt (footwork and return game). It should also be mentioned, however, that the continuous standardization of the court surfaces offers a decisive advantage for the playing style of all-round players.

In the basic system, Federer belongs to the predominant type of player in today's professional tennis, who essentially acts from the baseline of the court. Although Federer has also worked on his net game during the years under his coach Tony Roche, he still achieves the majority of his points gains by hitting the baseline. The most spectacular and most successful stroke in Federer's game is the forehand, which Tennis Magazine describes as the best forehand in the history of the sport. According to Skidelsky, the secret of his forehand lies in his stick position , the modified Eastern grip that allows him to play any ball. Because of its speed, accuracy and reliability, Federer usually uses his forehand to end a rally or to force the opponent to make a decisive mistake. Compared to the forehand strike, Federer's backhand is seen as the weaker side. Federer uses his backhand significantly to prepare for a winning strike. Federer often works with the backhand slice, especially in return games, to force the opponent into a defensive situation. Forcing Federer to play with the backhand is one of the most tried and tested tactics to get the Swiss in trouble. High bouncing blows to the backhand were accordingly one of five possible ways to beat Federer, which Time Magazine suggested in 2007 after interviews with various tennis experts and players.

Although Federer's strong forehand usually takes up most of the description of his style of play, his defensive play and especially his footwork and movement on the pitch are important factors for his success. Tennis Magazine also called Federer's footwork the best in the history of the sport. The decisive person for the development of Federer's movements on the tennis court is the fitness trainer Pierre Paganini, with whom the Swiss has been working since the end of the 2000 season. Paganini trains with Federer significantly in the areas of athletics, footwork and strength training. The targeted work in these areas enables Federer to be particularly quick on short runs, so that he can run opposing blows faster than most other players and respond with much more deliberate setbacks. This opens up the possibility for the Swiss to take the offensive again or to gain points directly if they are in very severe distress.

Other areas in Roger Federer's game are mentioned rather incidentally in most analyzes. The Swiss serve is not one of his greatest strengths, but Federer has one of the most variable serves on the ATP Tour. In fact, Federer hits significantly fewer aces and service winners than the best servers in tennis today. Nevertheless, Federer has achieved a significant improvement in this area in recent years. He has continuously increased his average number of aces per game in recent years. In addition, Federer has been among the top ten players in this statistic for the respective year since 2002 with around 77% of points gained on first serves.

Although the net game in world tennis has lost its importance in recent years, Federer not only uses the game on the net regularly on fast surfaces in order to directly utilize good serves, but also often on slow surfaces such as sand to shorten running-intensive baseline duels. In historical comparison, however, Federer is not considered one of the best volleyball players. The Tennis Magazine named Federer among the best current players in this area, but especially in his numerous clay court duels against Rafael Nadal, Federer was regularly passed by the Spaniard on the net. Even the typical clay court strokes such as stop balls or lobballs have not been part of the frequently frequented stroke repertoire of the Swiss for a long time. However, Federer increased steadily even with these blows. On the way to his French Open victory in 2009 and in the further course of the season, he consistently and effectively integrated the stopball into his game.

In addition to the pure level of playing skills, the mental area, especially in Grand Slam tournaments, is a decisive factor in tennis. It is noteworthy in this context that Federer, who was considered a very vocal and hot-headed player at a young age, greatly changed his appearance on the pitch early in his professional career. Even in tight game situations, Federer rarely shows emotions and thus hardly allows his opponents to assess his actual condition. In addition, Federer is known for calling up his best tennis in crucial situations. Proof of this are his strong tie-break record (Federer is in first place in the statistics of players with more than 100 tie-breaks with around 66% won tie-breaks) and the percentage of break chances averted (here Federer was in the season 2006 ranked first among the ATP players with 70%).

All of these playing skills of Federer, coupled with his almost unprecedented success rate in recent years, have meant that numerous players check off their games against Federer as lost even before the actual event. This is an observation that Time Magazine also addressed in the article on the ways to beat Federer. So says David Nalbandian , the eight matches against Federer, decided for themselves that many players better chances against Federer would have if they would go with a different motivation in the matches against the Swiss.

In 2015, Federer attracted attention in the tennis world with a new setback technique, in which he returned the ball as early as possible after the opponent's serve in order to give the opponent less time for his next stroke. The hit became known as Sabr (Sneak Attack by Roger).
