Daniil Sergejewitsch Medvedev ( Russian Даниил Сергеевич Медведев ; born February 11, 1996 in Moscow ) is a Russian tennis player .
After Medvedev had to admit defeat in his first two finals at a Grand Slam tournament (US Open 2019 and Australian Open 2021), winning the US Open 2021 was the greatest success of his career to date. He is the third Grand Slam winner from Russia after Yevgeny Kafelnikow and Marat Safin , who can both claim two Grand Slam titles for themselves.
Career
Until 2014: Youth and Junior Tour
On the ITF Junior Tour , Medvedev was able to achieve his highest ranking in 2014 with 13th place. He won eight individual titles, including one in the second-highest category, Grade 1 . He played at least once in all four Junior Grand Slam tournaments, but never made it past the third round in singles and never made it past the quarter-finals in doubles. In mid-2014 he ended his time as a junior. At the same time as the Junior Tour, he was also taking part in professional tournaments.
Until 2016: beginnings and top 100 entry
Medvedev played mainly on the Future Tour until 2015 , where he won a total of four titles each in singles and doubles.
It premiered on the ATP World Tour in Moscow in 2015 . At the side of Aslan Karazew he started in the main field of the doubles competition. After they were victorious in the first round, they lost in the quarterfinals against Radu Albot and František Čermák in straight sets. Medvedev made his singles debut in Nice in 2016 , where he lost to Guido Pella in three sets after successfully qualifying in the first round . Only a short time later he won his first match on the ATP Tour in 's-Hertogenbosch by defeating Horacio Zeballos in the first round. In the further course of the season he reached the main round at other ATP events, his best result was the quarter-finals at his home tournament in Moscow . Medvedev ended 2016 in 99th place for the first time in the top 100 of the world rankings .
2017–2018: First ATP tournament victories
During the 2017 season, Medvedev established himself on the ATP Tour. Right at the start of the season he reached the first ATP final of his career in Chennai , which he lost in straight sets to Roberto Bautista Agut . A few weeks later he made his debut for the Russian Davis Cup team . During the season, Medvedev also took part in all four Grand Slam tournaments for the first time. Only in Wimbledon did he succeed in a match, when he surprisingly defeated world number three Stan Wawrinka in four sets in the first round, but was eliminated in five sets against qualifier Ruben Bemelmans in the next round . Through several quarter-finals and a semi-finals on grass in Eastbourne, he consolidated his position in the top 100 in the world. With his ranking he was allowed to participate in the Next Gen ATP Finals at the end of the season and only lost there in the semifinals. He finished the 2017 season in 65th place in the world rankings.
Medvedev's final breakthrough came in the 2018 season . At the beginning of the season he moved into the second ATP final of his career in Sydney and won his first title against Alex de Minaur . The sand and grass season was rather less successful for Medvedev, his best result was reaching the third round of Wimbledon . He won his second title in Winston-Salem just before the US Open , where he then reached the third round of a Grand Slam tournament for the second time in a row. In the last part of the season Medvedev won the third title of the season in Tokyo and for the first time a success at an ATP Tour 500 event . By participating in the semi-finals in Moscow and Basel , he made it into the top 20 in the world rankings at the end of the season, where he finished the season in 16th place.
2019: US Open final and first Masters title
In the 2019 season, Medvedev continued to improve, but missed his fourth tournament win in the Brisbane final against Kei Nishikori . After victories over Lloyd Harris , Ryan Harrison and David Goffin , he reached the round of 16 of a Grand Slam tournament for the first time at the Australian Open , where he then had to admit defeat to the eventual winner Novak Đoković in four sets. In February Medvedev won his first title of the season in Sofia with a two-set win over Márton Fucsovics . At the beginning of the clay court season he showed better results on this surface than in previous years and reached the semifinals of a Masters tournament in Monte Carlo for the first time . At the following ATP 500 tournament in Barcelona he reached the final, which he lost to Dominic Thiem . The rest of the sand season was not very successful, however, at the French Open he failed again in the first round.
In August 2019, Medvedev first reached the finals in Washington, DC and at the Masters in Montreal . Without losing a set he reached the final of both tournaments, but then lost both finals in two sets against Nick Kyrgios and Rafael Nadal . At the Masters in Cincinnati he reached the semifinals without losing a set and defeated the world number one Novak Đoković there after a set deficit. With a two-set win in the final against David Goffin , he was able to win his first Masters title here. Medvedev reached his first Grand Slam final at the US Open . Against Rafael Nadal, he was able to win the following two sets after a 2-0 set deficit and also make up a break deficit in the fifth set at 2: 5, but still lost the game with 4: 6 in the decisive set after just under five hours. In the world rankings Medvedev rose to fourth place through this tournament success. He continued his winning streak in the last part of the season by first winning the ATP Tour 250 tournament in St. Petersburg and then in Shanghai his second Masters title in a row. With four tournament wins and five other finals within the 2019 season, he qualified as the fourth-best player of the season for the ATP Finals , but lost all three matches there and was eliminated after the preliminary round.
2020: Victory at the ATP Finals
Medvedev began 2020 at the ATP Cup with individual victories over Fabio Fognini , John Isner , Casper Ruud and Diego Schwartzman , before the Russian team was eliminated in the semifinals after Medvedev lost three sets against Novak Đoković and two more defeats against Serbia. At the Australian Open Medvedev reached the round of 16, where he was defeated by Stan Wawrinka 2: 6, 6: 2, 6: 4, 6: 7, 2: 6. After hardly any tournaments could take place throughout the season due to the COVID-19 pandemic , the US Open was the next Grand Slam tournament of the year. There Medvedev reached the semifinals without losing a set, where he was defeated by the eventual tournament winner Dominic Thiem with 2: 6, 6: 7, 6: 7. At the French Open , which was postponed to October, however, he was eliminated in the first round against Márton Fucsovics . After all, he won the last Masters tournament of the 2020 season in Paris-Bercy on hard court with a three-set win over Alexander Zverev. At the ATP Finals at the end of the season, he won all three group games against Zverev, Đoković and Schwartzman without losing a set, defeated Rafael Nadal in three sets in the semifinals and - for the first time in the final - also won against Dominic Thiem in three sets. He finished the year at number 4 in the world.
2021: Australian Open final and US Open title
At the beginning of the 2021 season, Medvedev and Russia won the ATP Cup in the final against Italy. Overall, he was able to win all of his four individual games played during the tournament. At the Australian Open Medvedev got into the third round without losing a set, where he was only able to defeat Filip Krajinović 6-0 in the fifth set despite a 2-0 set lead . In the quarterfinals he won against Andrei Rublev , in the semifinals against Stefanos Tsitsipas in three straight sets. Medvedev had won 20 games in a row across the seasons and - with the exception of Roger Federer, who was inactive at the time - was able to defeat all top 10 players at least once. However, after a contested first set, he lost the final of the Australian Open to Novak Đoković quite clearly in three sets in less than two hours. Less than a month later, Medvedev was able to win the final in Marseille and thus moved up to second place in the ATP rankings for the first time. At the Masters in Miami he came as the top seeded player to the quarterfinals, where he lost to Roberto Bautista Agut in straight sets. This was his third loss in the third clash against the Spaniard. At the US Open , the Russian achieved his greatest success so far when he defeated the Serb Novak Đoković in three sets in the singles final . In the entire tournament, he gave only one set in the quarter-finals against the qualifier Botic van de Zandschulp and at the same time prevented with his victory the Grand Slam of the world number one who won the first three Grand Slam tournaments of the year.
