Mardy Fish (born December 9, 1981 in Edina , Minnesota ) is a retired American tennis player .
Career
Fish turned pro tennis at the age of 18. In the first few years he played mostly smaller tournaments until he was successful in doubles with Andy Roddick in Houston in 2002 .
In 2003 he won his first individual title at the Stockholm Open with a final victory over the Swede Robin Söderling . He finished the year twentieth in the world rankings .
In 2004 he reached the finals of the SAP Open in San José and the Gerry Weber Open in Halle. In August he won the silver medal for the USA at the Olympic Games in Athens when he lost to Chilean Nicolás Massú in the final . There were no further successes in this or the following season.
In 2006, Fish celebrated his second tournament victory when he won the Houston ATP tournament with a final victory over Jürgen Melzer . He also reached the quarter-finals in Newport , Washington and Metz .
At the beginning of 2007, Fish caused a stir with the quarter-finals at the Australian Open . The semi-finals in Auckland and Memphis and the quarter-finals in San José were further successes. After a half-year dry spell, he reached the final of New Haven in August 2007 , which he lost 5: 7, 4: 6 to James Blake .
On March 22, 2008 he defeated Roger Federer 6-2 and 6-3 in the semifinals of the Indian Wells Masters . He lost the final against Novak Đoković .
The 2009 season turned out to be extremely successful with reaching the finals at the ATP tournament in Doha and the victories in Delray Beach as well as in the double competition of the Indian Wells Masters . After early defeats in the Masters tournaments in Paris and Rome , Fish achieved his greatest success so far in a Grand Slam tournament in the doubles competition at Wimbledon . At the side of James Blake, he only lost in the semi-finals against eventual tournament winners Daniel Nestor and Nenad Zimonjić .
At the Davis Cup encounter against Croatia in July, he suffered an abdominal muscle injury in the game against Marin Čilić , which prevented him from participating in the LA Tennis Open in Los Angeles. When he returned to the tour, he was defeated by the German Philipp Petzschner in the first round of the Legg Mason Tennis Classics . He also had to cancel the US Open , where he was placed 25th, due to an injury.
The 2010 season began for Fish with a double title at the ATP tournament in San José with his compatriot Sam Querrey , when they defeated the German-Argentinian team Benjamin Becker / Leonardo Mayer in the final there. In the grass season he reached the finals twice; in the Queen's Club he was defeated by Sam Querrey 6: 7 3 and 5: 7, in Newport Fish celebrated his fourth title on the ATP World Tour , his first individual title on grass. He defeated the Belgian Olivier Rochus in the final in three sets. As a result, he again achieved a place in the top 50 of the tennis world rankings .
The North American hard court season was even more successful. Fish immediately won the following tournament in Atlanta by defeating his compatriot John Isner in three hard-fought sets with 4: 6, 6: 4 and 7: 6 4 . This success brought him 14 places up to 35th place in the ATP ranking. In Washington he won the double competition with Mark Knowles against Tomáš Berdych and Radek Štěpánek . At the Masters tournament in Cincinnati , Fish confirmed his strong form. He reached the final and on the way beat the top ten players Fernando Verdasco , Andy Roddick and Andy Murray , whom he defeated for the third time this season. In the final he was defeated, despite a very good performance, to Roger Federer, who just got the upper hand with 6: 7 5 , 7: 6 1 and 6: 4. Despite the defeat in the final, he climbed to 21st place in the world rankings. After the US Open, where he was traded as an insider tip, but failed in the round of 16 at the eventual finalist Novak Đoković, he was in the top 20 for the first time since 2004 in 2010 he played in Beijing , after which he was sidelined due to an injury.
The 2011 season started modestly. At the preparatory tournament in Brisbane and at the Australian Open , he was eliminated in the second round. But already at the following hard court tournaments in North America, Fish advanced further; in Memphis , Delray Beach and the Masters tournament in Miami he reached the semi-finals, only in Indian Wells he had to accept a surprising opening defeat against the young Milos Raonic . With his results, Fish moved into the top ten for the first time and replaced Andy Roddick as number 1 in the US men. The clay court season in Europe was less successful, but he was able to celebrate a success in Roland Garros . There he moved into the third round for the first time, in which he had to admit defeat to Frenchman Gilles Simon . After that, Fish was unable to play a preparatory tournament for Wimbledon due to injury . Nevertheless, he reached the quarter-finals of the lawn classic, which he lost to the eventual finalist Rafael Nadal . The Davis Cup encounter against Spain was disappointing when he lost both individual games in front of a home crowd and thus sealed the elimination of the USA. Fish started the North American hard court season successfully in the summer. He was able to defend his title in Atlanta , beating his compatriot John Isner in the final like last year. Also a week later in Los Angeles he reached the final, but there he was defeated by the Latvian Ernests Gulbis . Fish was also very successful at the Masters tournament in Montreal ; until 2011 he had never reached the second round there, this time he made it to the finals, where he was narrowly defeated by world number one Đoković. So he was left behind at the fourth attempt in the final of a Masters tournament; however, participation in the finals gave him valuable points and he equalized his record with position 7 in the world list. The following week he reached the semi-finals in Cincinnati , which he lost to Andy Murray after defeating Rafael Nadal in the quarter-finals. With these good results, Fish won the US Open Series in 2011 - with the highest number of points since its inception.
After his departure from the Miami Masters in the 2012 season, Fish suffered from acute heart problems and panic attacks , and had to do without tournament starts several times. In 2013 he still suffered from the consequences. He missed all Grand Slam tournaments and only appeared in five events, in which he completed a total of eight games. He fell far behind in the world rankings, in September 2013 he finished 359th. In 2014 he did not take part in any tournament, he was no longer listed in the individual rankings .
In July 2015, he announced his retirement after the US Open. He still played the tournaments in Atlanta and Cincinnati and then retired from the US Open in the second round.
