David Poisson (born March 31, 1982 in Annecy , † November 13, 2017 in Nakiska , Alberta , Canada ) was a French ski racer . He mainly started in the Downhill and Super-G disciplines . His greatest success was winning the bronze medal in the downhill at the 2013 World Championships in Schladming .

biography

Poisson drove FIS races from December 1997, he had his first start in the European Cup in January 2001. He was able to achieve two podium places in the European Cup and was third in the downhill classification in the 2006/07 season . In the World Cup , Poisson made his debut on February 14, 2004, on the downhill from St. Anton am Arlberg , where he won his first World Cup points as 29th. He attracted attention at the 2005 World Cup in Bormio , when he came ninth as the best Frenchman in both the downhill and Super-G. In the World Cup, a 25th place was his best result.

It was not until February 29, 2008, when Poisson achieved a top 10 result in the World Cup, when he finished tenth in the downhill from Kvitfjell . At his second World Cup in Val-d'Isère in 2009 , he only reached 34th place in the Super-G, he could not finish the downhill. Further top 10 results in World Cup descents followed on January 24, 2009 in Kitzbühel and on December 5, 2009 in Beaver Creek . At the World Cup descent from Bormio on December 29, 2009, he reached fourth place. After that, he did not achieve any top positions in the World Cup for a long time and only rarely drove under the fastest 20. At the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver , he nevertheless reached seventh place in the downhill.

On March 3, 2012 Poisson finished sixth in the downhill from Kvitfjell for the first time in over two years in a World Cup race among the top ten. On January 26, 2013, on the Streif in Kitzbühel, he equalized his best World Cup result as fourth on the Hahnenkamm downhill run. Two weeks later he surprisingly won the bronze medal at the 2013 World Championships . His only podium finish in a World Cup race was achieved by Poisson on December 29, 2015, when he finished third on the descent from Santa Caterina Valfurva .

Because of his powerful driving style, Poisson was nicknamed Caillou ("pebble").

David Poisson had an accident on November 13, 2017 during a downhill training run in the Canadian ski resort Nakiska . He lost a ski shortly before the finish line, causing him to fall, break two safety nets and hit a tree head-on. All attempts by the rescue workers to resuscitate him on site failed. After the accident, the poor route safety measures were criticized as these were less robust B-nets, some of which were only a few meters away from the edge of the forest.

Poisson had a son.
