The Arachnological Society e. V. ( AraGes for short ) is an association that deals in particular with the promotion of scientific exchange on the taxonomy, occurrence and distribution, biology and ecology of the arachnids found in Central Europe ( spiders , harvestmen , pseudoscorpions , scorpions and palpigradi ).

AraGes was founded on October 13, 1996 in Adelsheim-Sennfeld . The entry in the register of associations took place on June 26, 1997 in Bayreuth ; this is also the seat of the association.

AraGes is the publisher of the Arachnologische Mitteilungen (print: ISSN  1018-4171 , online: ISSN  2199-7233 ).

AraGes has been proclaiming the spider of the year every year since 2000 to draw attention to the endangerment of these animals and their habitats. Since 2006, the spider of the year has been proclaimed across Europe, in cooperation u. a. with the European Society of Arachnology .

The AraGes should not be confused with the DeArGe, the German Arachnological Society. V. , which sees itself as a forum for terrarium owners who deal with keeping, breeding and researching tarantulas and scorpions.
