The Association for Natural Forest Management (ANW) is a nationwide association that has committed itself to the goal of optimizing forestry both ecologically and economically .

History and organization

The association was founded in 1950 in Schwäbisch Hall. Members of the ANW are the regional groups, for example the ANW regional group North Rhine-Westphalia . Many of the ANW's ideas can now also be found in the objectives of the state forest administrations and the state forest laws . For example, since 2011 the shooting plan for hoofed game in Rhineland-Palatinate has only stipulated a minimum number if the browsing situation endangers the regeneration of tree species appropriate to the location.

The ANW is a member of Pro Silva Europe (Association for natural silviculture). Federal chairmen of the ANW were Karl Dannecker (1950–1954), Willy Wobst (1954–1971), Willi Gayler (1971–1981), Hilmar Schoepffer (1981–1989) and Sebastian Freiherr von Rotenhan (1989–2001). Hans von der Goltz has been the federal chairman since 2001.

The starting point of natural forestry movement is the so-called permanent forest contending that of Alfred Möller has been triggered, the director of the Eberswalde Forestry Academy 1922nd He had examined the Bärenthorener forest in terms of silviculture and yield and presented its meaning and importance to the broader forest public of his time in his book The permanent forest thought . This writing triggered the so-called permanent forest dispute, which led to the foundation of the ANW after the war.

The ANW has been publishing the specialist journal Der Dauerwald every six months since 1989 . Magazine for natural forest management .

Principles

  • Stock economy, d. H. Maintenance of the standing supply according to the motto "The good remains, the bad falls first"
  • Careful handling of the natural site factors (forest soil), e.g. B. by mixed forest principle
  • predominantly native tree species (in Germany these are mostly deciduous trees ), but the addition of conifer species such as spruce or Douglas fir is desirable or tolerated
  • Build-up of multi-layered forest structures through single-trunk use ( plenter forest , trees of different dimensions, heights and ages), in particular through clearcutting-free economy
  • forest acceptable ungulates dense (reducing browsing - and peeling damage as well as the separation and species depletion caused by ungulates)
  • No fertilization or chemical pesticides

The core idea is by taking advantage of natural processes the forest not only efficient to maintain, but also by the least possible disturbance of the ecosystem to provide a comprehensive conservation and make it more resistant to Biot and abiotic hazards. In comparison to conventional silviculture (= age-class forest), the result is stable forests that deliver higher yields and at the same time become significantly more ecologically valuable. Storms and bark beetles cause less damage; thicker and more valuable trees provide improved income. Considerably more species find a habitat in the richly structured forests .

Advanced training

The ANW offers its members and those interested in forest a wide range of information about excursions and exercises in the forest, training trips at home and abroad as well as specialist lectures.
