The Arena of Pop was an open-air musical event in Mannheim that took place from 2006 to 2011 with free entry in the main courtyard of the palace and in the adjacent Bismarck and Breite Straße . It was organized and sponsored by the state of Baden-Württemberg and the radio station Radio Regenbogen . The Popakademie Baden-Württemberg and the radio station bigFM were also involved .

history

The Arena of Pop, which was held for the first time in 2006, was the successor to the Arena of Sound Festival, which last took place in 2004 at Stuttgart's Schloßplatz . The relocation of one of the largest free open-air festivals to Mannheim in 2006 was related to efforts to establish the city as a “Mecca of pop music”. The artistic and commercial success of the Mannheim music scene in recent years led to the foundation of the Baden-Württemberg Pop Academy and the music park in Mannheim's Jungbusch district .

The Pop Academy was an integral part of the event and presented itself on its own stage. There, the students, the young and the alumni of the academy were given the opportunity to inspire a larger audience. In 2007 Danny Fresh, SchulzeMeierLehman, la Fuso, the David Huhn Band, as well as AyeAyeKapitain, Noch Ne Band, Crutch, Bakku Shan, Quarter, Derby's Orchestra and Louis & Laserpower played.

An annual repetition of the festival in Mannheim initially seemed assured until 2009. Due to high security costs for the enormous number of visitors, 150,000 spectators were expected for 2008, the Arena of Pop could not be financed, and a two-year cycle was introduced. The last festival took place on July 9, 2011.

The green-red state government of Baden-Württemberg, in office since May 2011, decided in 2012 to no longer contribute to the costs of the event. Previously, the state of Baden-Württemberg had borne a third of the expenditure (in 2011 this was a sum of 250,000 euros). Alternative locations or the collection of entrance fees were rejected because this would have decisively changed the character of the event.
