In 1964 he moved to the record company "Ru-Jac Records" in Baltimore and released "I'm a Lonely Stranger" here. When Otis Redding heard of this recording, he made Conley an offer in 1967 to release a new version on Redding's own record company "Jotis Records", which was only the company's second record. Together they then rewrote the original Sam Cooke song "Yeah Man" as "Sweet Soul Music", which was then released at Redding's endeavor at Atco Records , a subsidiary of "Fame Records", and at FAME Studios in Muscle Shoals, Alabama. has been recorded. It became a hit that rose to number two in the US charts and the top ten in most European countries. “Sweet Soul Music” was sold over a million times and was awarded a gold record. After further single releases in the early 1970s, Conley went to England in 1975 and then settled in Amsterdam in the spring of 1977 . At the beginning of the 1980s he had successful appearances as "Lee Roberts and the Sweaters" at Ganzenhoef, Paradiso, De Melkweg and the Concertgebouw . At the end of the 1980s he moved to Ruurlo, where he officially changed his name to Lee Roberts (a combination of his middle name and his mother's maiden name).

Here he continued the music business with his company "Art-Con Productions Company". One of the music groups under contract with him was the heavy metal band "Shockwave" from The Hague .

A live concert by Lee Roberts & the Sweaters on January 8, 1980 was released as the album Soulin 1988.
