Arto Sakari Ruotanen (born April 11, 1961 in Pyhäjärvi ) is a former Finnish ice hockey player and current coach .

Career

Arto Ruotanen began his career as an ice hockey player at Kärpät Oulu , for whose professional team he was active from 1979 to 1986 in the SM-liiga , the highest Finnish league. In the 1984/85 season he was elected to the league's All-Star Team. From 1986 to 1992 the defender was under contract with the HV71 in the Swedish Elitserien . He was then committed to the 1992/93 season by BSC Preussen from the ice hockey Bundesliga . For Berlin he scored three goals and three assists in 24 games. For the 1993/94 season , the Finn returned to Sweden, where he played for Rögle BK in the Elitserien from 1993 to 1996 . With Rögle he rose in the 1995/96 season in the then second-rate Division 1 . In this he ran in the 1996/97 season for IF Troja-Ljungby . Most recently, the three-time Olympic participant was active for the Nittorps IK from Division 2 in the 1997/98 season , before ending his active career at the age of 37.

From 1998 to 2003 Ruotanen was active as an assistant coach at his ex-club HV71 in the Elitserien. From 2003 to 2006 he was the head coach of Tranås AIF, which is now in the third class Division 1 .

International

For Finland , Ruotanen took part in the junior division of the U18 European Junior Championship in 1979 and the U20 World Junior Championship in 1981 . At the U20 World Cup in 1981 he won the silver medal with his team.

In the senior sector, he was part of his country's squad at the 1985 , 1986 , 1987 , 1990 , 1991 and 1992 World Championships . He also competed with Finland at the 1984 Winter Olympics in Sarajevo , 1988 in Calgary and 1992 in Albertville, and in 1991 at the Canaca Cup . At the 1988 Winter Games and the 1992 World Cup, he won the silver medal with Finland.
