Artur Steinwenter

Artur Steinwenter (born May 17, 1888 in Marburg an der Drau , † March 14, 1959 in Graz ) was an Austrian legal historian .

Life

Artur Steinwenter, the son of the grammar school director and historian Arthur Steinwenter (1850-1939), grew up in Graz. After graduating from high school , he studied law at the University of Graz (with Leopold Wenger , Gustav Hanausek and Ivo Pfaff ), of which he was a member for the rest of his life. He received his doctorate here in 1912 and his habilitation in 1914 , was appointed associate professor of Roman law in 1918, and full professor of Roman law in 1924. On October 1, 1939, his teaching obligation was extended to include Austrian civil law.

During his tenure, Steinwenter was actively involved in academic self-government: he was dean of the law faculty three times (in 1930/31, 1947/48 and 1949/50). In 1935 he was elected a corresponding member (1943 a full member) of the Austrian Academy of Sciences , and in 1942 a corresponding member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences . In 1958 he retired , but remained active in research and teaching until his death (March 14, 1959). He is buried in the St. Leonhard Cemetery.

In his research work Steinwenter dealt with Roman and Greek law. His studies on legal papyrology are of particular importance . His “Law of Coptic Documents” (1955) should be emphasized.

Steinwenter's numerous students include Max Kaser , Hermann Baltl , Helmut Schnizer and his Graz chair successor Gunter Wesener . A commemorative publication was dedicated to Steinwenter on his 70th birthday.
